On a related subject as has been mentioned here already, I got a boatload of random comments on an older project that have been working on at the office. Once per week. Fixed many of them, but one comment was much of the text font is all wrong and rather ramdomly placed. I want to fix this, but at home.

The employer gave out several of the cheapie Flash drives and asked me to downlaod the bad file, take home, correct it, and insert into the server next visit. I had been using floppy disks, and tapes to do this sort of thing, but now these little bitty keyfob sized drives you are to insert into the USB port are supposed to work OK.

The (bad or fixable) files loaded up fast and smartly at the office. I take the Flash home, plug it in then ,,, nothing. No blink on it, nor anything saying it is plugged in. I contacted the Flash manufacturer, and they think my music files (some how they got to thinking wrong here) is not compatible in some way with the home computer. Wrong OS (even though it was listed as OK onna package).

At home I got a Wind. 98 system, and it also cites the ME version. But keep getting error message popping up that says some VXD or DLL file cannot be located.

Worked OK for past two years, why now? Got a solution? And internet or other transferrs are near out of the question due to several (office) reasons. The office is now set on these itty bitty Flash drives. Where do I got to got to locate the missing file types, if all you can think of?

Windows 98 did not support USB, and Win98SE only had partial support. In general, most USB flash drives probably won't work in Win98. You might take a look at this link for more info: http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

You guys should look into a VPN setup so you can remote into your work machine from home, and avoid duplicate files, lost flash drives, etc.

There comes a time when one must abandon the old setup and upgrade to something a little more current. If price is an obstacle buy a used computer that's running Windows XP. Heck, I just retired one I'll give you a good price on! LOL

Well, I used to have a flash drive working OK on the older computer. Plug into backside and copy off the older Autocad (revised) files seconds later and take anyplace. It was tossed into some nearby drawer, and now is gone. Was told this new device worked same as older ones did. The Autocad files I need are way too small for it's capacity, so easily will fit.

I have a version of 98 at home that reads 98 and ME which came at purchase time of the computer. Was on sale one week and next week they were selling ME versions. Told via radio NOT to buy ME for it had problems, wait until 2000 was out then try it.

I sort of like the older Win. 98 now. Simplier and faster for what I want to do at home.

But if things worked OK back when, then they ought to be same today. May be the driver was with original drive, and not in the newest one. So, need to locate the correct driver then.

Got email? Why not just email the *.dwg file(s) to your own, at home, email address?

I've done this numerous times, worked rather well.

When done, email to your office email address.

Well, if your employer is asking you to take home work to fix, then they could at least give you the appropriate equipment to do so. I hope they are paying you for this home work as well..

Tank:

Have done that routine before. Takes way too long, maybe near to one extra half hour. I have to find and bring and extra cord that it real long to office, so that can connect run it down hallway and then connect in to outlet (a few minutes). At work NOT everyone is allowed to dial out or in. Something to do with their security measures. So, only one 'puter can get there, and in meantime we all have to (inter-office) send stuff to that particular 'puter.

Then go home and have to connect in to ISP and download on to my home computer files.

Do the project updating at home, and repeat in reverse order.

Beginning to see why I like the Flash drive system? Your's may work, but is actually slower (time-wise) for me.

KC... Sure get paid well for the home work, long as I remember to hand in a chit for the time involved. As I do not have to drive to work, dress up, or get up out of bed at an unusual hour, it works out at my end then.

Plus do not have to speak to any of the meanies at the gasoline house either.

The home work is actually a blessing right now in keeping the doors moving at the office, and I do not have to file for un-employment (an All day chore) either. No complaints, except wished the partners would have thought of the routine much earlier.

I used to have the "proper" equipment, but Boy Genius then went and changed things to a different system last year, and now......

I agree with Tankman. E-mail is a very efficient method of getting files home or just about anywhere. From your reply one can only conclude that you don't really understand how to use e-mail effectively or hook up an Internet connection that will be easy to use.

As an IT person I see this alot. The race track has all kinds of fast cars available at a low price. But many folks choose to get on the bicycle and then complain they can't go fast.

Perhaps the work PC and the at home PC both have CD-RW drives?

Too much but, would be nice.

By the way Bill, great avatar!

Naww,,,

As explained aready, the E:mail situation is really out of the question. That is unless I would like to stand around the office for 2-4 hours, each time, to ensure files got transferred off the server and then sent over the wires. Although the text situation is not a rush item, I do not like to stand around the office

As for the CD-ROM idea that works, used it in the past a few times now, but I can only receive at this time due to some change in my home software. The drive went out, got another one, but for some reason it does not like to work with the software. I understand now that software was there for a while written to and for one computer only to cut down on piracy.

Buy a used portable Zip drive (Iomega) and attach it to the parallel port. Copy the drawing file onto the disc. Shut down your computer. Disconnect the Zip drive and bring it home with you. Load the file onto your hard drive.

Do you work for one of the top defense industries in the U.S. or the government? Jeez, how paranoid are these people anyway? Some past employee burn them or something?

It sounds like they tell you "Here, do this job. And oh, by the way, do it with your eyes closed and your hands tied behind your back."

That certainly sounds interesting. Tell me more if you can then.

Not in a biggie hurry, but they do want the correction finished by about last week of the month. May be the shortest way after all. I have a box full of suitable media from the neighbor, and the few files would easily fit.

I used to use this method at one time and still have my Iomega Zip drive and a couple of 250MB disks. I would shuffle files between work and home once a week. At the time either flash drives had not been introduced or when they were the capacity was too small and the price too high. Now I use a flash drive all the time.

Have you done an Internet search on using a flash drive with your current system? Perhaps there is a workaround (a combination of hardware/software).

250 MB would be MORE than adequate for files. Then, would not have to compress them either. Makes for a faster, faster transfer then. I had been ZIP compressing the files and then going on to common (obsolete) floppy disks, but space available on these is making the selection run short.

Used to have an Iomega drive connected in to back side of Office computer, hope the software is still good. Don't know what Boy Genious did last week of last month when he last reported as ding this "Upgrade". I think he is still using Win. 95 at his home, as the laptop computer he is using there is rather slow in comparison to todays.

Last thing did for Govm't was the units families at the missle defence center planed out near to Las Vegaas, Nevada, way back in the 1980's. I think we are still on the short list, and I hear that anyday now a go-ahead letter will be sent out.
