kjetilhansen Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Hi all. Im am sorry about not searching, but i dont know what to search for, i am not shure how to explanine my problem, but i am going to try. I am draving a homemade cnc machine, and the top marked whit blue is supposed to slide on the rail, and it does, but the problem is i dont know how to stop it to slide off.. i need it to stop when it hits the wall... Anybody know how? Thanks. Quote
shift1313 Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Do you need it to stop just for your modeling purposes? You can turn on the contact solver which will not allow solid parts to pass through other solid parts. Do you need help with the constraints for the table or is the "stop" all you were asking for help with. Quote
kencaz Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 As Shift stated, contact solver is the way to go... Just right click on each part and select "Contact Set" Now you need to turn on the solver under "Tools" >> "Activate Contact Solver" as such: KC Quote
JD Mather Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Once you verify the mechanism motion it is advisable to turn off the Contact Solver as it is resource intensive. If you have Inventor with Dynamic Simulation there are other options as well. Quote
kjetilhansen Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 mabe i got other issues.. cause i tryed to do as you said, but it dident work.. it still passes through the "steel"... Am i doing it wrong, or is there somthing i need to do first? Thanks Quote
shift1313 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 You need need to tell inventor what parts are in the "contact set" just as ken mentioned. Then you need to turn on the contact solver. If you just turn it on but no parts are "contact sets" then you will not see any results. Quote
kjetilhansen Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Still nothing... I dont know if i am doing it right though... what i do is: I choose one of the walls i dont want it to go through, and right click and selects "contact set" then i choose the moving part and choose "contact set" on that too. Then i go to tools - document settings - moddeling - and then i choose contact set only - all surfaces and then i move the moving part back and forward a coupple of times, i am still going throug the wall, and then i turn contact set off, but still nothing... JD Mather Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Attach your assembly here (or a simple representative assembly). Can't remember exactly where it was, how it was termed in 2009 - but did you find the Activate Contact Solver toggle icon? I don't think it was document settings - I think that was extra options. I think it was simply Tools>Activate Contact Solver. See Tip #93 http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2006/MA13-3%20Mather.pdf Quote
kjetilhansen Posted April 21, 2010 Author Posted April 21, 2010 Hi. Is it okay whit only the assebly, or do you need the parts too? Here is the assebly http://rapidshare.com/files/378581388/Assembly1.iam.html Quote
shift1313 Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Click on the part in your feature tree(right click) and select Contact Set. The contact set icon will appear next to the name. Once all the components you want are contact sets go to the Inspect tab and click Activate Contact Solver. Quote
JD Mather Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 Hi. Is it okay whit only the assebly, or do you need the parts too? Of course an assembly without parts is useless. Quote
shift1313 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Hi. Is it okay whit only the assebly, or do you need the parts too? Here is the assebly http://rapidshare.com/files/378581388/Assembly1.iam.html The assembly file(depending on if you created parts in there or inserted them) will just be a reference to the components and not actually have them included. It will contain the information needed to put the parts together(ie your constraints) but whoever opens your .iam file will only get an error. Quote
kjetilhansen Posted April 22, 2010 Author Posted April 22, 2010 Hi. I have tryed evrything now... i dont know if there is somthing wrong in my settings or somthing... I have added all my files in a .rar file as you said. Thank you for your help http://rapidshare.com/files/378842625/cnc_maskin.rar.html Quote
shift1313 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Does the Contact set icon appear next to your parts? Quote
kencaz Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 It's probably best if you just used a Rotation-Translation constraint then use an angle constraint to drive the wheel a set distance. This would be better for animating in Studio then trying to use the resource intensive contact solver. Just a thought. KC Quote
kencaz Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 You added everything but the kitchen sink to that contact set!!! I removed all and added only what is in purple to the set and it seems to work fine. I still think it's better to just add transitional constraints that can be driven. KC Quote
kencaz Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Driven flush constraint... No contact solver needed KC Quote

KC Yes, add only what is absolutely needed to contact set as contact solver is resource intensive and part already (always) in contact can freeze the solution. Then turn off the solver once motion is verified. And as you indicated a driven constraint is more efficient. In fact, I generally only use Contact Solver when one motion has to intermittently move another part - not to stop motion. Quote
