jayseanrr Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Hey guys, how is eveyone? I am a newbie so this is my first ost on your forum Anyways I was searching the net the other day and saw a pretty cool chicken feeder and thought i wouldn't mind making one Only problem is i dont have any plans on how it works dam lol I have a pic for reference, if you need a better look there are some on UK ebay under treadle feeders Since I dont live in the UK would be quite an expensive venture to order and ship one But i know with all the wonderful people on here someone would have a drawing or blueprint or some sort of direction that will help me make one Thank you for anyone who has helped me in advice Quote
MikeScott Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Here you go: http://www.backyardchickens.com/chicken_feeder.php you should be able to come up with blueprints from that. Quote
Tankman Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Here you go: http://www.backyardchickens.com/chicken_feeder.phpyou should be able to come up with blueprints from that. Nice post Mike. I had a similar, but much smaller, feeder. Now, if I was in the sheetmetal shop, another home job. A basic sheetmetal assembly might do the trick. 316 SS naturally! Or galvanized if you're buyin'. jayseanrr: Welcome to the forums. Where are you posting from? Feeder_Assy.dwg Quote

Many chickens down your way? I did a load of tanks, cleaning fluids, for Tyson Foods. Seems they're everywhere. Never made a chicken feeder but, I did purchase a couple of simple designs. Played, after your post, using sheetmetal patterns to come up with something. Then got carried away, added to chickens to the *.dwg. I'm not too busy..............need a nap before Friday night goin' out! Quote

jayseanrr Posted April 24, 2010 Author Posted April 24, 2010 Thanks everyone for your input I was more in trying to put a flap on it so when the chicken stands on it it opens a flap i got more pictures for a better view First picture has the flap closed In this picture you can see the weight applied to the plate underneath opens the flap so the chickens can have a feed Reason why i want to make one with a opening flap is because I dont want to have a rat problem later one if i can seal the food source away they will run away elsewhere Any input on how the flap system works would be help Can't wait to make one for my chooks Quote
kencaz Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Looks like a pretty simple pivot joint. The chain pulls down to swivel the door upward and gravity closes it. You just have to experiment a little on the pivot placement for the weight of the average chicken. KC Quote

The pivoting panel won't open if subject to the weight of a full feeder unless, there was one stationary baffle keeping the weight off the moving panel. Seems simple enough to add one more stationary panel. The stationary panel need not be any distance the resulting opening, open panel, could be small but still allow feed to fall. If the little chicken jumps off the platform, might consider a spring loaded mechanism to close the activating panel. Quote
MikeScott Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 Nice link Mike! Many chickens down your way? no.. no chicken experience, just google. I didn't want to hand-off blueprints to what I suspected to be a student, but wanted to help if it was a legit request. It's kinda' random to head to a CAD group to find chicken feeder sheet metal drawings when there's so many do-it-yourself type sites that cover farm stuff. That floor panel looks like it's on a pivot and uses an offset lever to spring the trap. The lever is offset to provide resistance based on the weight of the chicken.. I guess this is only useful to a chicken beyond a certain age.. or they'd be as light as rats, and not tall enough to get their heads in there. Quote
David Bethel Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 I have a squirrel proof bird feeder. Sounds like you need just the opposite. If there is too much weight on the perch, the guard closes access to to feed. You would need to open access when the bird ( or a little weight ) steps on the perch. Not a great pic but it was a quick google search. -David Quote
