aliveli Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Hello guys... I have autocad 2009, autocad raster design 2009 and autocad map 3d 2009. here is the question; i have a topographic map and they want me to draw a cross section from upper left corner to lower right corner. could you please explain me how to do that? what should be the steps? MikeScott Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 I'm skipping a couple of steps here that will be obvious when you actually draw this, because if this is for class, you need to determine how to do it yourself.: Draw a line from corner to corner, and find the heights that cross that line. Draw a horizontal line in CAD representing the length of that line. (draw a perpendicular line to your line) then look for topographical lines that cross your section line. Offset that perpendicular line the appropriate distance to the topographical lines from one end. Trim the lines at the noted elevations. Then connect those lines and you're done.. Quote
ScribbleJ Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 You have quite a task ahead of you here. There is a lot of area along the length of that line which means a lot of work to do by manual means. Just follow what MikeScott mentioned and you will get there eventually. To help clarify the subject here. The line you described will represent an alignment (or the line from upper left to lower right) and any data (in this case contours) that you derive for your line is a profile not a cross section. The cross sections would be any other line that would intersect perpendicular to the right or left of your alignment along the length of it at any given interval. By having a profile and then cross sections you can determine what the terrain looks like around the area for design purposes. Quote
aliveli Posted April 26, 2010 Author Posted April 26, 2010 thank you guys...I am sure I will have lots of problems in the future while learning those programs...thank you again for your time... Quote
ScribbleJ Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 thank you guys...I am sure I will have lots of problems in the future while learning those programs...thank you again for your time... Glad to help out. Enjoy the learning process and never stop learning. Life is a learning process and this is a great place to learn about AutoCad. You have (literally) decades upon decades of knowledge here and many willing to share it. Quote
BIGAL Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 A couple more suggestion after drawing your "alignment" line do "ucs obj" pick the left end the type "plan", this will rotate the drawing to be square to the line making the line lengths easier to draw as the contour level. Next play join the lines (pline) then "Ucs W plan" to return to normal view, turn your new line into a block if you re insert it you can change the y scale to give it a vertical exaggeration say 5 times X. ScribbleJ Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 That is an excellent suggestion BIGAL. This is one thing that makes CAD Tutor so awesome. Knowledge is power. Shared knowledge is even more powerful. Quote
