Notepad works for me at the command line in both AutoCAD '05 and '07.

I'm thinking notepad was the dinosaur leading up to MTEXT.

No one has mentioned it, but there's also the old single-line editor for MText.

 

Change MTEXTED to ":LispEd".

 

eg.

Enter new value for MTEXTED, or . for none <":lisped">:
