XREF Image To AutoCAD To Inventor 2009

I want to xref an image into an AutoCAD drawing, trace around that image, then import that dwg into an IV .IPT.

Is this possible?

Even if it were to come in kinda squirrley, I figure I could still do a little clean-up on it.

I need to create an .IAM of a farm tractor. If this idea is duable, it would sure make things a lot easier (& faster).

Why use AutoCAD. Bring the image directly into Inventor and sketch over it - that is what I do.

How would you insert it?

Import, or is there another way to do it?

I am used to XREFing an image. Importing, using IV would be a 1st for me.

Inside the sketch environment, go to Insert Image. I think in 2009 it was either in the menu pull downs or at the very bottom of the sketch tools panel.

I'll try to post an example latter today, but what I do is start a new sketch. I then create a line over the image at a known true length of the part. I then measure the line and calculate the scale factor that I need to scale the image ot get it corrrect size. Add dimension to the image to scale it to correct size and anchor to the origin at meaningful location.

Exit sketch

I then start new sketches overtop the image sketch.

At first, this didn't work for me.

Then, once I realized that I had to UNCHECK the "link" box, the image popped into place.

I don't know what that link box is for, but I am glad I decided to uncheck it.
