Inventor 08 sketch coordinate system

Hello, getting the white cross error on 2 sketches. For some reason the coordinate system is no longer at XYZ 0,0,0.

Inventor recommends to edit coordinate system. I am not able to relocate the coordinate system to it's correct location. If I delete the sketch it will cost me hrs to recreate all GEOM.

If anyone in the world knows how to re-position the sketch coordinate system in inventor 08 please let me know.

Thank you

David

In the browser find the red End of Part marker.

Drag the red EOP to the top of the browser hiding all features.

Save the file.

In Windows Explorer right click on the file name and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Attach the resulting *.zip file here and I'll let you know what you need to do to save hrs of work.

Thank you, but these are proprietary drawings & models. I would lose my job, and could be arrested.

I'll give it another day and see if anyone in the world knows the answer to this simple question. If not I will just have to start over from the beginning.

How much Inventor training have you had?

It might be better to talk to your reseller who most companies set up NDAs with.

Training very little, been using it for over 2 years. Much of what I know is self taught.

I now see or are pretty sure after reading some of the posts that my coordinate system problem occurred due to my selecting geometry in the model instead of selecting a WORK PLANE for my sketch to be drawn upon.

If you replace or change that geometry in the future it can cause some serious problems.

Always select a Work Plane instead of GEOM, if you do not have a work plane create it 1st in Inventor.

The assy. that I am working on we did replace an existing part with a new part of a different shape. I do not remember there being any issues with this assy. when it was 1st created. After part replacement is when I 1st noticed the white-crosses.

Thanks for all input!

Yep, use the BORN Technique as much as possible in Inventor, SolidWorks or Pro/E http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2006/MA13-3%20Mather.pdf

It is possible to redifine the coordinate system, but frankly I never see this problem in my work. I only see it in the work of my beginner students. I was hoping to see one of your files to perhaps suggest improved modeling techniques.

Hi JD

I noticed you mention the BORN technique some other time. What is it? could you please give us a hint on where to find a tut?

Regards.

Uhmmm, I posted link in previous response here. Here is the link again. http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2006/MA13-3%20Mather.pdf

As much as possible use your origin planes for sketches. Not always the most convenient (and sometimes maybe not the most appropriate) but certainly the most robust. In most of my parts you can delete every feature without breaking a sketch - and all the information needed to create the part is still in the file.

I did try to redefine, but was only able to do so with the 1st problem feature. The other features ( there were 3 problem features not 2 ) it will not allow me to select anything that places the coord sys in a proper position. Why doesn't inventor allow you to use the X & Y planes for things like this?

Yes a training class would be great for me I am sure, will take a look at some of your links. Sure I will learn from them. Had no idea that inventor was creating a new coordinate system each time I selected a part surface. Does it automatically select the nearest intersection as I always pick on an open area of the surface where there are no intersections or endpoints?

Yes you can call me a beginner as long as I get paid the same compared to you I am sure that I am a beginner. Would have to create something from scratch to send you.

Thank you!
