so is there a way to change the way it displays threads in idws? my boss wants it to show the actual threads more instead of just the dotted lines

thanks

It is highly usual to show actual threads except for large threads. For smaller threads if actual geometry is used the lines would be so close together when printing to print as a black blob.

Also, modeled threads will slow down your computer.

But since your boss wants modeled threads here is how to do it (written for a different CAD program but generally the same in Inventor (only easier as you don't need to create a separate helix - simply use the Coil command)) http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/content/CAD238/AutoCAD%202007%20Tutorial%204.pdf

if you get stuck simply attach what you have so far.

Oh, and if there will be a lot of these in your assembly tell your boss you need a faster computer.

that's what i was afraid of, i was hoping there was a setting or option somewhere to change it, but if drawing it using the coil command is the only way, then i guess i'll have to look into it (or convince my boss he doesn't need to actually see the threads)

oh and yeah, i already need a faster computer

So the basic problems are: Boss wants cut threads, you need faster computer. Fortunately the solution solves both problems. Here is how -

Step 1. Cut the threads.

Step 2. Create the assembly with all of your cut thread parts.

Step 3. Show your boss how slow your machine is - but look at the pretty threads. (zoom in and out)

Wait for your new computer to arrive.

Step 4. ... then demonstrate on print how cut threads don't really show up and simplified representation is what the machinist needs.

you are a true genius, i'll let you know how this clever scheme works out *rubs hands together menacingly*
