Bind nested xrefs, Microstation can do it, why can't ACAD?

I am woking with an AutoCAD 2008 project where I have to send out the As Builts to the Client. We bind all files and just send them the sheet file on a disc.

Company policy is we never use attach xref only overlay. Well some users get click happy and do not pay attention when brining in their xrefs and it is defaulted to attach.

This causes a nested xref and can get quite deep if nested many times. This become near to imposible to bind the reference files.

I have to use Microstation to merge all reference files to one file.

My question is, if Microstation can merge nested reference files, why can't AutoCAD???

You might want to try dwgtrueview 2010 , 2011. I setup a conversion style then modified it to bind everything as a insert. -David

Thanks for the help

I downloaded the True view 2011 but it does not solve my issue, it actualy does a worse job than eTransmit from ACAD. I tried both bind and insert. Same results. I got all the live information and it totaly left the xrefs behind.

I tested it on a file that was not (xref attached and nested) and it worked fine.

I am still curiouse why Microstation can murge nested references and ACAD can not. I know it can be done because Mstation does it. The only issue using mstaton, well one I have to do a multiple step translation so time is an issue and second there are other translation querks to work around. Colors change, things go missing, or things appear that should not.

I find it hard to believe that AutoDesk has not addressed this issue, specialy since I heard they hired one of the top mstation programers away from Bentley.

I am a little frustrated with this since it take me a week + to untangle this nested mess.

I find it equally frustrating. I have more problems with invalid block/layer/table names when trying to bind things together. I guess the stuff I get is not nested more that 1 or 2 deep. I know xrefs can be productive. But to get the most out them, a standard needs to be set and followed. IMO -David
