bilalbajwa Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Guys i am trying to model the "Temple Tips of the glasses" I have no idea where to begin. Can someone please shed some light? I am starting from temple tips and than going to come again on this forum for further modeling of other parts after i give them a try. Quote
shift1313 Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 thats going to be a fairly advanced part. do you have any good reference photos? There are several different methods to modeling something like that. I dont have the time now but maybe this evening I will be able to make a few screen shots for you. It will be best for you to have a side view, front view and top view of a pair of glasses. Quote
bhamze Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 bilal, Here are some pictures. This was a quick model and wasn't intended to be accurate. To model this type of geometry correctly you need more reference or prints. I decided to model the entire part, I felt that starting with the ear pieces would create problems down the road.Let me know if you have any questions. Quote
shift1313 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I played around with it a little bit tonight. I didnt really have a good reference and I dont wear glasses so I just took a shot in the dark. Im pretty tired at the moment so im not going to run through how to make it just yet but here is the file that you can look at. You may wonder why I made a projected curve then converted it into a 3d sketch and trimmed it. When you are working with surfaces like boundary patches, it wont let you select a project curve and a 2d sketch as a single edge. At least in 09 it wont, not sure about 2010. So my way around that is to create a 3d sketch and just cut it apart where I want it. I prefer to make some reference sketches early on. When i get a chance I will try to step through it but ask any questions you may have. ps great job bill. that looks excellent. I agree that starting with the ear piece is probably not the best approach. I would probably start with the lens but I would have to give it a shot first. EyeGlassEnd.zip Quote
bilalbajwa Posted July 15, 2010 Author Posted July 15, 2010 Thanks shift1313 for the file. I will post the picture of the glasses i am trying to model i.e top, front, and side. The glasses i am trying to model are more polygonal. "bhamze" that looks great. :shock:Dying to have hands on the file. Please post so that i and others can see how you r doing stuff. Quote

Remember, this was done quickly with no design intent. Most of the sketches are under defined and feature tree could be cleaner. If this was a production model, it would have taken many hours to define sketches and add detail. The model is OK for reference though. I hope you like it, enjoy. http://www.easy-share.com/1911331499/Glasses.SLDPRT Quote

I started with the lenses, great minds think alike . Do you plan on installing 2010? It would like your opinion on my models. Quote
shift1313 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 it will be a few months before I install 2010 unfortunately. cant risk the change at this stage of one of our larger projects. my model too was very under-defined Its amazing how fast you can model when you dont worry about that stuff right:) Quote
bhamze Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 That long...............at that point I may have 2011 . I thought when installing SW you have an option of doing a clean install, this wont affect your 2009 version. Check it out. Hey, relations........who needs em'. Quote
shift1313 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 well the issue is service pack problems. backwards comparability and so on. I was told I could upgrade to 2010 now but it would cause all kinds of issues that I dont want to deal with. Since i end up editing lots of other peoples parts they need to be able to use them after I am done. you just need to quit upgrading:) Quote
bhamze Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 I decided to model a different pair of glasses, this model was much harder than expected, the geometry was very difficult to duplicate. I have a few more surfaces to complete, once completed I will add texture and appearance. I will post once completed. Quote
shift1313 Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 they look great bill. Glasses are definately a hard one to reproduce. Can't wait to see more. Quote
bhamze Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Thanks Matt. Here's the completed model. Quote
shift1313 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Awesome job! If you send me the file ill so some quick renders if you want:) For the rubber inset on the ears, is that a material or did you actually model all the divots? Quote
bhamze Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Thanks again, I'll take you up on that offer. I will send file shortly. The insets are just a material change, I used the carbon fiber appearance to achieve the divot affect. I'm curious how this would look after rendering. Check out images below. When I change appearance of lenses to any transparency I get visible white edges between lenses and frames. I tried making lenses bigger so edges are inside of frame but white edges are still visible. When lenses are set to 0 transparency the edges are gone. I can also remove white edges by unchecking anti-alias edges/sketches in system options under display/selection. The problem with this is that the edges of frame are now jagged. Could this be a video card issue, or am I doing something wrong? Quote
shift1313 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Im not sure about the lenses. One thing you could try is instead of applying material/transparency to the solid body, just do the inside and outside face, then make the face that meets the frame frosted like they do on real lenses. its possible that it wont show up in the renders that way. Quote
bhamze Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 I tried that. I applied a mirror blue glass finish on the outside face, a gray glass finish on the inside face, and a black finish on the face that joins the front and back of lenses. Nothing I do fixes the problem. When you view file, please let be know if white edges are visible. Maybe its my machine. Thanks again. Quote
shift1313 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Bill I played around with the file after doing some conversions on it so I dont have any applied materials from your file. I just did some quick renders for you. I will play around with it more when i get the chance. I think the issue you are seeing with the edge of the lens isnt anything to worry about. Just a graphical thing when viewing the model in a studio type setting. Quote
