Rictoven2 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Hello I am new to the world of 3d design and am using solidworks '09. I have searched for the solution to my question and not found answers--yet. I have designed a radial component with square shoulders on two opposite sides. It is a removable cam boss. I need to make a hole on the flat surface of each shoulder which will partially cut into the radial segment of the part. Hole wizard will cut a hole into the flat section of the shoulder only. Thus the hole is squared off where it encounters the radial part of the component. Would someone please recommend the appropriate tool for making a hole tangentially to a radius. Or direct me to a tutorial which covers this. My other question deals with separating the component into two pieces, and upper and lower. Is there a tool which splits the component? Thank you in advance:) Quote
Tharwat Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Although that I do not like the 3d designs but I have the answer for your question. first make a cylinder which is suits your desire of diameter and insterted in the shape that you want to make a hole within. and chose the command subtract from MODIFY -> SOLID EDITING -> SUBTRACT and follow the steps to make your hole subtracted form the shape. Bye Tharwat Quote

shift1313 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 i am having trouble picturing the problem. Is there a picture or screen shot to aid me? From the sound of it there are many ways to approach this. By your description I would say either an Extrude-cut or possibly a revolve-cut. There is a split feature as well as cut with surface feature. Split will allow you to select faces or planes and separate a solid that way. Quote

I am discovering how to use the split tool and I have attempted several times to use extrude cut. Oddly, even though my component is oriented appropriately (i am looking at the top of it) when I apply the extrude cut it places the holes (countersinks) on the bottom surface. The top surface is contoured IE there is a fillet where the shoulder encounters the radial section so it is sorta S shaped. I think that is why the hole wizard wont place a countersink hole there. I will continue to work on it. I have a 2008 tutorial but it seems quite basic. The revolve tool may meet the challenge os soon as I learn more about its capabilities. I just think I need a more detailed or in depth tutorial on these tools. Many thanks for the help. Quote
shift1313 Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 One thing to keep in mind is the multitude of options for each feature. You have no less than 6 options for start/end conditions of an extrude cut. If you can email me the file ill have a look at it for you and see what i think. Without having a clear view of the problem its really hard for me to give you a valid solution. Quote
Rictoven2 Posted July 25, 2010 Author Posted July 25, 2010 I think I have enough trial and error time on the split tool to have plodded my way through it. The holes on the other hand are still vexing my progress. I appreciate the opportunity to send you the file and look forward to you feed back on it. I will try to send it off this afternoon and any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Quote

Hey rictoven, i know you dont have enough posts here to make use of private mesages but when you click on my name do you have the option to send me an email through the forum? Quote
Rictoven2 Posted July 26, 2010 Author Posted July 26, 2010 It appears that is not an option for me. I did reply to the e-mail I receive as a result of responses to my posts here. I have sent you the sketch I have questions about via a reply to those e-mail notifications. I do not know if it will work that way or not. Quote
shift1313 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Im not sure who emailed you but it wasnt me:) I think once you get to 10 posts the options to use PM will be available to you. Note that posts in the community forum dont go towards your post count. Quote
Rictoven2 Posted July 27, 2010 Author Posted July 27, 2010 Well I get an e-mail response when someone replies to my post and it is labeled admistrator At cadtutor dot.... I simply replied to it in hopes that would work. Some one got a rather long winded post with a part file attaches and they are going WTF??? So not having the proper e-mail address or not knowing where to find it sorta works against me. But I'm still looking for advice on this one. Quote
shift1313 Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 send it to maperez at vt dot edu and i will do what i can. Quote
