Dynamic Blocks - Drop-Down Boxes for Lookup/Visibility Grip-Tips do not work

Recommended Posts

What is the procedure for getting the VISIBILITY and LOOKUP Drop-Down Boxes to display near the down orrow on the drawing screen when using Dynamic Blocks? I am using AutoCAD 2006.

I have set the GRIPTIPS variable to “1” and I would have expected that variable to solve the problem.

When I click on the block, the Down Arrows for the Visibility and Lookup Grips appear adjacent to the block, as they should. When I click on the Down-Arrow Grip, the Down Arrow highlights, but the drop-down box does not appear.

If I select the block and run the PROPERTIES command, both the VISIBILITY and LOOKUP pull-down options appear the "Properites->Custom” sub-page. The lookup features work fine from the properties Dialog Box.

I was not able to locate any setting in the Block Edit that might help.

Any suggestions? I have been looking to see if 2006 had any bugs with this feature, but it appears that it should be working properly.

I have attached the block if that is of any help. I think that this problem exists on all dynamic blocks having visibility/lookup grips, and is not limited to this drawing.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I inserted the dwg as a block and it seemed to work properly; clicking on the DB's visibility grip gave me the option for UP or DOWN on screen. The Lookup grip seemed to work also.

Try entering Popups at the command line; if it returns 0 I don't think your video card will support the popups.

“Popups” is set to “1”

Thanks for testing the block for me. At least I know the problem is not related to the block, but must be something else. (BTW, were you able to test the block on AutoCAD 2006, as I am wondering if this problem was corrected in later versions).

At this point, I’m thinking there must be an AutoCAD variable that is not set properly on my computer. The AutoCAD “GRIPTIPS” variable is set to “1” and I would expect this variable should have solved the problem, but it did not. I am wondering if there is another setting under PREFERENCES that is not correct, maybe something to do with the tooltips.

Thanks again for your help. Please let me know if anything else occurs to you.

I found the cause. When I checked the box for "Shortcut menus in drawing area," the Grip Tips began working. Now I have to figure out how to make the right button enter and still get the Grip Tips.

Thanks for your help. You saved me from chasing my tail for a few more hours.

lpseifert,

Thanks for your help. The cause was that the checkbox in the "Shortcut menus in drawing area" in PREFERENCES was not checked. After checking the box, the Grip Tips began to work. Unfortunately, the right click button then pulls up the options, instead of being the good ole ENTER button. However, the fix for that problem is located at the CadTutor link below. The fix is to set the right mouse button to "time sensitive right click." So far, so good.
