porter Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 first solo attempt at cad after doing some tutorials successfuly, now my own attempt will not dimension the drawing as the tutorials did can someone please help and tell me what is wrong i am using 2010 Quote
Cat Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 I think we need a little more information. What type of dimension you're attempting? What it's doing instead of what you want it to do? Are you trying to dimension architectural drawings? Quote
Tankman Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 porter, welcome to the forums! Visit often. Try Chapter 26 online, you can also print to *.pdf for review at a later time. http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/course/48-568/2DVideosWEB_files/frame.htm Where are you posting from? Just curious. Quote
ReMark Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 If you have drawn everything in model space at full size you have a couple of readily available choices. You can add dimensions right in model space or you can switch to a layout (gives you access to paper space), create a viewport, assign it a scale, then do your dimensioning in the layout itself. porter Posted August 6, 2010 Author Posted August 6, 2010 I think we need a little more information. What type of dimension you're attempting? What it's doing instead of what you want it to do? Are you trying to dimension architectural drawings? thank you all for the quick response, the tutorials i was using are from mycadsite No1.8 so you can see how much of a novice i am as i said i did my own little drawing and tried to impress myself by dimensioning it as well but it would not work yet i could go back and redraw a tut and it would not sure how to attach a file yet but i tried so any help would be grateful acad dresser.dwg Quote
ReMark Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 My first question would be are you doing the drawing in metric units by any chance? I don't see any dimensions. What happened to them? Arch 2010 I see. Were you planning on using annotation scaling or what? Suggestion. Create a layer for your object (call it dresser) and create a layer for your dimensions (aptly called dimensions or dims). Good layer management practices can not be stressed enough. You don't know how many drawings we see where everything is on layer 0. By the way, the top left hand corner looks different from the top right hand corner. Why is that? Quote
Cat Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 Remark, I think the profiles of the top corners is an oopsy. Porter, Do you know the actual width or height that your dresser is suppose to be? As it's drawn, the dresser is 96'10" wide. Quote
porter Posted August 7, 2010 Author Posted August 7, 2010 1 i was drawing in metric 2 the profiles on the top 2 corners are different because it is a practice drawing to see how far i had gotten 3 the height was 90cm x38mm for the upright, 19mm lip 120cm across the top 50mm dia knobs to give you a basic idea ` 4 you cannot see any dimensions becuase that is what i am trying to put on there, when i try to dimension ican see it in the command line but it does not appear on the screen 5 i did the layers and still nothing 6 i think i have found it thanks to what ReMARK wrote i changed to model space and now i can dimension it does this mean i was not drawing in Model space once again thank all Quote
kencaz Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 (edited) does this mean i was not drawing in Model space Well, yes, If you were dimensioning in "Layout" (paper space), then you would not see your dimensions in Model Space. I personally don't think dimensioning in Layout is good practice because it becomes a problem when re-scaling your viewports. I would suggest dimensioning in Model Space put them on the appropriate Layers and read up on "Annotative Dimensions." They are one of the best additions to later AutoCAD releases and a real time saver when it's time to plot your drawings. This is for 2008 but the concept is the same... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_0vQeZUgz8 Good Luck KC Edited August 7, 2010 by kencaz Quote
ReMark Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 As long as "associative" is enabled in dimensioning there is no problem dimensioning in a layout when a viewport's scale is changed. I've been dimensioning in paper space layouts for several years now and have encountered few if any problems what-so-ever. I usually know well in advance what scales I'll be assigning to my viewports and have used the same custom dimstyle numerous times. Quote
