I'm thinking of building a new desktop. Obviously I will be doing CAD work, but I will also be using it for general purposes as well, and probably some games.

My Budget is about $1300, and so far I have:

1) Intel i7-930 2.8Ghz (4 cores, 8 threads & hyper-threading)

2) EVGA X58 3-way SLI mobo

3) Corsair 6GB triple channel DDR3 1600MHZ

4) Western Digital 1TB HDD

5) GeForce 9800 GT 1GB

*Plus the obvious things: PSU, some extra cooling fans, a case, and basic DVD burner.

Now I know what you're thinking; why the GeForce card, why not a some workstation card. Basically, because of the cost to really get a decent workstation card, and workstation cards don't do games. Anyways, what do you think? Pretty basic' not much exciting here. Would you switch anything around? I'll likely do a lot of rendering on this machine.

Looks OK to me. You must have a lot of games to need a 1TB hard drive. LOL

The only thing I might do differently is go with 8GB RAM. How many DIMM slots on the motherboard?

Not games, just documents.

I also do photography, and some of the files I have are upwards of 100MB each.

6 DIMM slots, triple channel.

Then pump the RAM up to 12GB and you'll never have to worry again.

I think your budget is abnormally high... Based on your specs id think you could build an i7 PC for well under 900. Hell, my i7 laptop was only $850 with the mobile 5870.

Anyway, if i were you i'd check http://www.slickdeals.net

using deals from there i managed to build an i7 desktop with a 5770 for ~$785.

I wouldnt get a 9800GT. It's based on 3 year old technology and is kind of slow at this point. You could get a 5770 for around $135 on sale and it destroys the 9800gt

edit: If you have a microcenter nearby you definitely want this: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2176988&p=31775732&highlight=asus#post31775732

Longchamp: How's about you post your computer specs? I'd like to see what you got for your $785.

$785.00 very reasonable.

What are the spec's?

I only have 2GB memory, AutoCAD '07 runs like a clock but, I'm not 3D'ing or rendering.

Easy plumbing layouts.
