I can't seem to get the sun to light my scene up well at all, as I believe global illumination/final gather should be able to do. Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong in my render settings as I'm not getting very far tweaking.

can you post a wireframe of the scene?

You mean like a screen shot of wireframe view?

Check "Skystatus" setting which stores three options: 0 = Sky Off, 1 = Sky Background and 2 = Sky Background and Illumination.

So....Skystatus value to 2 and test again.:)

Then sure to "lightingunits " value to "2".

at Final Gather--- Rays 1000

GI--- photons 500

radius mode ---on

dont touch sky options

Then sure to "lightingunits " value to "2".

Well it's definately this. I transfered the geometry to a new scene, turned on GI/final gather etc, and the lighting seemed fine, all except for the fact that the sun was no longer casting soft shadows, instead casting shadows with a hard edge. Changed LIGHTINGUNITS to 2 (tried 1 also) and got the same kind of result as above.

GD. Can anyone point me towards a better explaination of how this system variable work than the AutoCAD help one?

Did you try with skystatus ?

Softshadows for sun is Sky Background and Illumination is the best.

Then type " sunproperties " and you will see dialogbox. After that you can adjust value from Render shadows detail setting for samples & softness .:)

sorry, I use only 45/45 deg. dist. light...

Yeah my sun shadows were already set to soft (max value) but this doesn't seem to have an effect if lighting units is set to 0. If I set it to 1 or 2 the shadows were soft but the whole scene ended up dark as above.

I find the sun generally renders a bit quicker than parametric lights. I could be wrong though, I've never really tested one against the other.

I should have really been more clear about what I was trying to do, which was to light the scene without using internal lights, using just the reflected sun light. I'm not sure if this is possible but in the end I gave up, reverting to one point light with soft shadows, and one without shadows just to balance the lighting/shadow levels. Gives pretty pleasing results and a relatively short render time so I guess I'll just carry on using this for now.

I did try skystatus btw. It didn't seem to affect the lighting of the inside of the room.

Nice one, thanks a lot. The daylight/GI system just confuses me a bit sometimes, seems like it should be able to light a room with just daylight but I think in that thread you pulled up he reverted to something like I did with a combination of both sunlight and point lights. Cheers again!
