KnoJa31 Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 Hello everyone, Here is what i have: Templates, blocks and tool palettes are stored on a network server. A) Is there a way to restrict users from copying those files and walking away with them with out having to set permissions on the server? B) There is really no way from keeping someone from opening the template and inserting all of the blocks from the tool palettes and saving that file to there flash drive? Quote
nukecad Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 If they cant copy them then how are they going to use them in their own drawings? Think about it; when you insert a block or a template you are making a copy of it into your drawing. If you dont want anybody but yourself to use them then keep them on your own drive and not on the server. Quote
KnoJa31 Posted August 10, 2010 Author Posted August 10, 2010 Well heres the dilemma: We need to have to tools out on the network for the full time people but we dont want Contractors that will only be with us for a month or so to have access to copy the tools and us them at another company. I realize that there is really no way to prevent this other than not giving them the tools. I just figured i would ask so that i have covered all of my bases when i go and let my manager know. We have had a problem with our blocks showing up on other company drawings... and i know this because i put a "signature" in a specific location on all of my blocks!! Thanks nukecad for replying... Just need conformation!!! Quote
Pablo Ferral Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 You could frisk people as they leave the office. Or get one of them 'Flashy' doo-dad-um's like on Men in Black... Quote
rkmcswain Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 A) Yes, deny their access to the files using NTFS file permissions. B) See: http://www.howtodothings.com/computers/how-to-disable-usb-flash-disk-mass-storage-devices-only (One of many ways to do this) Quote
elmoleaf Posted August 26, 2010 Posted August 26, 2010 Seems like it's more trouble than it's worth to restrict access. Yes, the blocks represent time and investment on your part. But, unless you're selling them, how are the blocks occasionally walking out the door, or getting out as part of cad files sent to clients, hurting you financially? Seems the loss will be spending more time and effort to restrict access, when you could be working on jobs etc instead. Quote
