FAQ Team Calling Out For Help!!

We need to check a function against a the different versions of AutoCAD out there so please take two seconds and do us a favour, please!

We have a FAQ about to go Live called "How do I find out which version a drawing was saved in" which explains that by opening the drawing in Notepad and finding a certain number combination at the top of the document one can see which version of AutoCAD saved that particular dwg.

The numbers are:

  • AC1021: AutoCAD 2007/2008/2009
  • AC1018: AutoCAD 2004/2005/2006
  • AC1015: AutoCAD 2000, 2000i, 2002
  • AC1013: AutoCAD Release 14 sample drawings
  • AC1014: AutoCAD Release 14
  • AC1012: AutoCAD Release 13

What now has come up is that ACAD 2009 saves as default to the 2007-format. So it looks like it's not possible to save to a 2008-format at any time? Is this true? And how about format 2005? Does ACAD 2006 save to the 2004 format?

we need some checks on the different formats out there, so if one person in each version (and I absolutely think that we can cover just about every version out there) can check what numbers appear in the dwg-opened-in-Notepad are - we can put this FAQ out there in a jiffy!

So the last 2 digits refer to the release?

But can you actually save to a 2005-format?? I can't save down to 2005 from my 2008-copy... and per default it saves to 2007-format.

Posted

That is correct. The format only changes every few releases. They are 2 different things. I cannot verify the above but I have used it often enough over the years to expect it to be true.

I have all manner of save options- 2006, 2005Mech, 2005...

I just saved to 2006 and my Notepad file read AC1018.

that is correct - it has saved it in release 2004 format. There is no such thing as a 2006 format.

Yep I thought that was the case, just wasn't too confident about it.

Cheers Dave! :)

Don't remember where but I read that the format change every 3 years, that's why format 2004, works for ACAD2004, 5 and 6 and then format 2007 will work for ACAD2007, 8 and 9.

I suppose "pointless" is in the eye of the beholder.

Autodesk changes the format every 3-4 years as new technology becomes available. I am not sure, but the 04 format was pre-digital signature. When that technology became available, the 07 format came out. I have heard from a reliable source that the 07 format will extend through version 10. Time will tell though.

And that helped how? The question came up, we're trying to answer it, and forgive me if I'm finding it a bit hard to understand and need a bit more clarification to understand GEs comment.

wait a minute GE - you are saying you can do a Save As and choose "AutoCAD 2005" as the format? That is what it says in the drop down list where you choose from? But it's till 2004-format just that it's called 2005?? But then we need to keep all the different format-options - or keep them, and explain they are the releases, but the format is the same?

I think GE must have an extended list as mine only gives me the option of 2004 & 2007. I think you (we) need a way to differentiate between releases and format. Once that is grasped the rest falls into place - or at least it does for me.

hmm... but I notice that you only have 2000 and 2004 as the pure AutoCAD formats - is there something special about the Mech-formats?

Posted

I don't know- I'll save down to Mech '05 and see what happens in Notepad...

These intermediate file versions should be forgotten about imo.

Let's stick to what the majority of users will be able to see / accomplish; i.e. the list in Tiger's initial post on this thread.

Is there any difference between a mechanical file and a vanilla file? More accurately, has there ever been? If not it looks like padding, make you think you are getting something special. :)
