How can I make an ice cream cone

Recommended Posts

O.k. well I am in an autocad class and the T.A made an ice cream cone and I said it sucked, so he challenged me to make a better one and I cant figure it out. The teacher has no idea which is odd but if anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Classic waffle cone or cake cup style? http://www.joycone.com/retail_division.htm

Hand dipped or soft swirl?

Classic waffle cone and soft swirl would be difficult. I would model as tapered helical surface and then Thicken.

Cake cup style would be a simpe Revolve and Shell for basic shape. Getting texture (on either style) would be a bit more difficult. I would use a cosmetic texture (matlib)

Hand dipped create a bunch of spheres and move together for aesthetics. Might add a couple of portional revolves.

For soft swirl ice cream there is a similar Star tutorial in my signature. With a bit of changing dimensions you should get something respectable. http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/content/CAD238/AutoCAD%202007%20Tutorial%2011.pdf

Sounds like a good Sept challenge contest for tastiest looking CADCone.

I'll be back in a bit, I have to go do some research for proper dimensions. 8)

ah yet another reason why I couldn't be a teacher. I would have just failed you.

Just a plain ice cream cone waffle cone i guess, it doesnt have to be perfect or like extremely detailed or anything just like the basic color and shape. =P

I just eat my ice cream straight out of the container! Cones suck!

go with waffle. Those styrofoam ones are awful. And don't be stingy with the nut topping. Post results.

I couldn't get my mapping scale to work properly, especially on the cone.

I actually work for Joy Cone company. What exactly does your teacher want to see? How should the cone be "better"

what kind of work at Joy Cone involves CAD?

In addition to that, much the machinery involved in manufacturing ice cream cones is made in our own machine and fab shop. This includes ovens, conveyors, equipment layouts, etc...

But not in 3D, right? I see by your profile that you're using Autocad LT. Or do you use some other 3D software?

I've been using Autocad LT for the past 10 years here, but recently started using Solidworks back in January.

Some of our more recent work I've been using the mold design feature in SW to create cone designs.
