drewmore Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 I have plans that are 1/8” to 1’0 How do I convert this on AutoCAD 2010 ie. how do I draw 1/16 or 2” 3/16? In Drawing Units I have specified Architecture, however precision is not given in 1/8” to 1’0. Help. I feel like I am trying to reinvent the wheel! Thanks Drewmore Quote
Dana W Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Set your units > Type to Fractional. Set your dimension style Primary Units > Format to Fractional as well. Match the precision in both places too. Quote
ReMark Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 I think the OP's question is how one draws at a particular scale (1/8"=1'-0" or 3/16" = 1'-0") which we all now know is not the way to do it. Rather we should all be drawing at FULL size in model space. We should NOT be drawing as we would on a drafting board. That's my interpretation. Perhaps I am wrong. Quote

Yeah, I was sidestepping that (for the moment) to get to the conflict between the OP's format of 'Architechture' and showing fractions in the dimensions. Absolutely, draw at full scale. Doing otherwise elevates plotting to a specific scale into the scientific realm of computing a six speed transmission's gear ratios based on the final drive ratio of a given rear axle setup. (Not to mention having another draftsman modify a scaled drawing. ) I have interpreted incorrectly quite a lot lately by looking for the simplest element, so I did it again. I was going with "How do I draw [an object] 1/16" or 2 3/16"?" At any rate, whatever the scale, a person can input fractional lengths directly, if the units type is set properly. And, the dimensions will only show fractions if the style is defined as such. Quote
drewmore Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 Thanks Dana, Difficultly I have is seeing the actual dimensions when I am working in Fractions. I take it that AutoCAD only works in full numbers ie. .5/16 cannot be done. Quote
ReMark Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Well if one is working in decimal units then it would stand to reason they would use decimal fractions. 5/16=0.3125 However, if you insist on using architectural fractions in a drawing where units is set to decimal then type the distance as 6-1/2 and it will work.
