I am using AutoCAD LT 2008 and i've been sent a topographic survey which is a .dwg.

I have also been sent 2 accompanying files; a .lin (AutoCAD LT Linetype definition) and a .shx (AutoCAD LT Compiled Shape).

Could someone please advise how to insert/import these 2 accompanying files into the original drawing, which opens fine?

Many thanks.

I believe as long as they are all in a same folder Autocad will automatically detect and load them, there is no need to insert /import

No need to insert or import but you do have to load the linetype to use it. Re: shape file. From your AutoCAD Help file:

"You must load a shape (SHP) file the first time you need it; it is loaded automatically thereafter. The shape file must be available each time you edit the drawing."
