I am currently using autoCAD 2010, this has happened on 2 separate occasions, why do my DWG. files disappear and TMP. files show up in its place?

I would really appreciate your folks help on this as I am trying to get these edits done.

Thank You in advance

Are you working in a networked environment on a drawing that may reference xrefs used in more than one drawing?

for these drawings they were stand alone drawings that were not being used as xrefs or had xrefs attached to it

I've seen this happen in networked offices and it has something to do with the network server.

Do you get an error message similar to "Unable to save to drawing xxx.dwg as it is being accessed by another session?"

Try this...temporarily disable your antivirus program then try saving a drawing. What happens?

there haven't been any problems when I save, it saves like normal, this does not happen to every drawing I must have a thousand or so dwgs and it may have happened to 2 of them, unfortunately these are the only 2 that I know of because I am trying to do revisions on them

So where are you seeing these tmp files appear? If it saves like normal then what is your concern about the creation of tmp files? Don't they just disappear after you have finished working on the drawing?

i don't know, I save like regular when i'm done with the drawing, then I came back a month later and the dwg file is gone and in its place

are 3 in another case 4 files that read: sav166C.tmp, savABF.tmp, savCFBB.tmp, savE466.tmp and the dwg file is no longer in the folder

That sounds more like something on the server going haywire. We've got a service running on our server which places deleted files into a "recycle" bin - usually have about 5 to 10 versions of each. We see many of these TMP files there if ACad is not setup correctly ... you need to get ACad to save all its temp files on your local disk instead of in the same folder as the drawing - makes for better performance as well. This "should" be the default, but as always it's not necessarily the case.

In the Options dialog (Files Tab), see what's displayed in the Temporary Drawing File Location. If it's empty it uses the folder in which the DWG is saved. Same thing for the Temporary External Reference File Location. For that matter make sure all of these settings point to somewhere on your local hard drive ... I'd even suggest avoiding network shares in your Support File Search paths, but with some setups that's unavoidable.

Clean out all TMP files on the server. It sounds like a capacity problem.
