Problem opening CAD files, I'm using autocad 2002, OS is windows 7 ultimate 32-bit

This is what I get when opening a CAD file:

"There was a problem sending the command to the program"

Most of the time, despite this error message, I can open, edit, and save the file with no problem at all.

But sometimes it gives a 'fatal error', and I can't even open the file.

I didn't have this problem when I was still on windows xp.

It was when I switced to vista and eventually windows 7 that this problem started.

I have another computer (laptop) with windows 7, and autocad 2002 runs just fine with it.

Can it be a system registry problem?

Help please!!!

Thank you

The fact you can even run 2002 on a system with a Win7 OS is cause for celebration.

This sounds like a sporadic occurence so I would not be looking at a system registry problem otherwise wouldn't you experience the same problem with ALL drawings you try to open?

What is the source of the drawing file?

Hi. What do you mean source? I do not understand...sorry.

It's a dwg file, made in autocad 2002.

The file is saved in the same hard drive where the windows 7 is installed.

autocad 2002 is also installed in the same hard drive.

I was inquiring as to where the drawing came from. So, you made a drawing and now have trouble opening it. But this does not occur with every drawing you have made so that tells me it cannot be a Registry problem. Agreed?

Agreed. I already tried reinstalling autocad 2002, same problem. i wonder if i should try installing autocad 2010 architecture. By the way, could I still make 3d drawings in autocad architecture?

You've been reading too many Microsoft articles. Reinstalling software should not be one of the first things you do rather it should be the last thing you do when all other options have been exhausted. I might have said try the Repair option but we weren't even at that point yet.

Right click on the Desktop icon for AutoCAD 2002 and select Properties. Click on the Compatability tab. Is there a box labeled Run this program as an Administrator? Is it checked off or not?

Why would you still be using AutoCAD 2002 if you have AutoCAD Architecture 2010? Yes, you can create 3D drawings in AA 2010.

Did you try to run a Recover or Audit on the problem drawing(s)?

I don't have archi yet, still thinking of getting one. I did not try to run a Recover or Audit on the problem drawing.

"Is there a box labeled Run this program as an Administrator? Is it checked off or not?"

I just checked it, same outcome.

by the way, the fatal error is: FATAL ERROR: Unhandled e06d7363h Exception at 75b29617h

I couldn't install AutoCAD 2005 on windows 7... how did you do it?

wish i knew....anyway, i uninstalled autocad 2002, installed autocad architecture 2010 on my windows 7 pc, and now here's the problem, i hope anyone can help me...

I can open my .dwg files that were made in autocad 2002, but i get this message before the file actually opens, "sample.dwg is currently in use or is read-only. Would you like to open the file read-only?"

I click yes, drew a simple line, click save, and got the message "Drawing file is write protected."

So I exit autocad without saving, right click on sample.dwg, click properties, go to Security tab, look in the 'Group or user names:' to see which one isn't "Allowed" to Write, and just Edit it accordingly.

Now I open the file again, and I don't get the ""sample.dwg is currently in use or is read-only. Would you like to open the file read-only?" message anymore. So far, so good.

I draw a simple line, click save, got this message:

"Unable to save to drawing C:\acadfiles\Mine\sample.dwg.

Drawing saved to C:\acadfiles\Mine\savB6BF.tmp"

I navigate to that folder, sample.dwg seems to be missing, but the savB6BF.tmp is there. I renamed savB6BF.tmp back to sample.dwg , opened it, edited it, and was able to save it with no problem.

Problem solved. But I'd hate to do this to ALL of my old dwg files. Is there an easier way? Really appreciate it guys, thanks a lot!

It's just one happy moment after another for you isn't it?

Are you on a network?

Clean out your TMP files.

Check that the Read-only attribute is disabled on the drawing folder.

When was the last time you cleaned out your TMP files?
