twistun Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 I'm teaching myself about using "fields". I can create one but aren't they supposed to update all layouts at once? How is that done? Can anyone recommend a good video or text tutorial on using "fields". If they don't update all my layouts simultaneously, eg. title change or any of the areas of my titleblock text then I guess I don't need them. Thanks, Randy Quote
rkent Posted January 8, 2011 Posted January 8, 2011 REGENALL should update all of them. Also see FIELDEVAL in help. Quote
qball Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 hmmm, didn't know REgenall worked. UPDATEFIELD also works by selecting the fields. Quote
JPlanera Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 indydrafter.com has some basic info on fields... Quote
DRBJR45 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 im happy to see others are having the same issue. i too create drawings with multiple layouts with titleblocks on them and ive been trying to use fields but not getting the results i need. so until i find the right info on field use i resorted to the old fashion xref. i created template (.dwt) with an xref attached. the template contains all the tabs i will need and each has the xref attached. so im updating the xref once and all the attached sheets on the layouts update accordingly. until i get the field issue solved, this is my work around. eyde Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 It is very easy to update fields. I love fields and use them a lot. Under Options/User Preferences/Field update settings Quote
DRBJR45 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 My problem is i don't understand all the variables as listed. Fields look powerful but without an explanation of what all the options mean im dead in the water. My biggest roadblock is i want the fields to update across layout tabs…..for example, i want to enter the customer name as a field in layout 1 and have that field populate the rest of my titleblocks on the rest of my layouts…..i can use the date and sheet names because they seem to operate independently inside each layout. The settings as you mention seem to update the fields on regen or plot or ect…….not much help on updating across layout tabs…..do you have any suggestions????? Quote
eyde Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Yes, Under the big A up in left corner go to drawing utilities/drawing properties/custom and add your prompts to this area (i.e. Drawing Title, Drawn BY ect.). Create each line of your title block with fields use document to select the custom doc for your fields. Copy your title block to each layout tab, then when you fill out the fields in the custom area it will populate in each title block. I hope this helps, I am not very good at explaining things. Quote
DRBJR45 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Haha….yea….it took me a couple of times reading your explanation but it was worth it!! Ok…i never would have thought that the drawing properties menu would drive the field information…..wow…..once i applied the knowledge you gave me i now have a workable drawing template with multiple layouts that update simply by entering the job info using drawing properties…..you rock eyde!! Go bears!! (from chicago but live in phoenix) Quote
