I am a fairly new user to AutoCAD and need to know how to convert "TEXT" to "MTEXT". I inherited a bunch of drawings and want to convert some of the text to a particular font. Since many of the annotations are in TEXT, I haven't been able to find a way to change the font. I can change the style in Properties, but not the font. Any help in that regard would be appreciated.

Look in Express Tools for a lisp routine that converts Text to MText or type txt2mtext at the command line to start it.

Thank you very much - that worked.

You're entirely welcomed eric. And BTW...welcome to the CADTutor forum.

Are you a student?

What types of drawings do you create with AutoCAD?

No - not a student. I have been a Facilities Manager for about 20 years and the company offered an opportunity to learn CAD a couple of years ago. I figured - why not - could look good on my resume. So around 10 of us took the class, but the instructor decided that me and one of the other Facilities Managers in a different location were the only ones that showed any aptitude for the software. Lucky me... I guess. Long story short - we are the only two guys in the company that work with CAD. We have a Real Estate potrfolio of over 3,000,000 sq. ft. and over 5000 employees. I do mostly updates on floor plans, but have dabbled in MEP layouts and such for some projects. It really comes in handy when we have to go out for permitting - saves a lot of time and money. We have the engineers look at it and seal it. Makes it real easy. Again, thanks for your help

Trying to keep up with the changes to AutoCAD every year makes me feel like a student and I've been using it for a while. Always some new command/technique to learn but never enough time.

To change the Font, you need to open the styles manager (ST) and create a new style with the font you want, or if you just want to change the font, select the style you want to change, change the font, and save the style. You have no idea how much of a PITA it is to edit a drawing that has text style overrides applied to mtext. and in regards to text to mtext, yes, follow ReMarks's suggestion.

Thanks for your help. I followed ReMark's suggestions (had to actually download Express Tools from the disc) and it worked out. I then - as you suggested - opened the style manager and was able to change 80% of my drawings fairly easily. However, I do have one more drawing that I can only change it name by name (I'm changing fonts for employee names to be the same in all drawings - just an aesthetics thing - I'm very **** about stuff like that) so I know what you mean by it being a pain with the text overrides and such. Again, thanks for your help

Hi...I am Rose...is this applicable to MEP 2013...because as of now I am using this version but I used to try the command txt2mtext but the command reply Unknown command.

Thank you!

As stated above, the TXT2MTEXT command is part of Express extension pack that is shipped with AutoCAD and also with vertical products. Most probably this wasn't installed on your workstation - should locate the original disk and install it.

Also, I have encountered this error...I have drawing that existing MTEXT but I cannot edit the text....below is the message in the command prompt.

Command:

Command: _mtedit Cannot find shell program.

Thanks!

Good call Mircea.

If you are not familiar with it, there is a wonderful express tool,

which should be available to you in 2013.

The commandline entry for it is SYSVDLG (System Variables Dialogue).

It can also be accessed from the EXPRESS TOOLS dropdown in the MENU TOOLBAR, or from the EXPRESS panel on the ribbon.

It will show you the available SYSTEM VARIABLE SETTINGS, in the program, and explain the different available options.

It is extremely helpful and educational.

I find that there is no express tools bar in the menu toolbar in MEP 2013 unlike when I use the Autocadd 2011 version there is an express tools bar

.

Thank you!

That makes it sound like what Mircea suggested, that the EXPRESS TOOLS option was not selected when installing the software. :ouch:
