hi i had drawing from customer in dgn form.

what they do is include alldifferent layouts (electrical, cable, grounding etc) in one 3ds drawing. due to that this file becomes really big .(excess of 220mb).

now i only want one drawing from that in cad form.

1) is there way to seperate this 3ds file in parts? there are about 10 models on this drawing because i can not save this big file as dxf it freezes

2)i just wanted to equipment layout so what i did is copy that design on new dgn file. now file size is about 100mb but i still can save or export to dxf. it does about 96% gives error creating dxf and thats it.

3)i even seperated new dgn in parts to but no success.

anyone please help how can i save this file in dxf or any other way so i could open it on dwg. please note i got dgn program but i am not trained to do any work on that.

thanks all!

Are you opening them with AutoCAD and trying to save them?

no, its 3ds so i open it in dgn and want to save it as dxf or dwg so i can use on other autocad drawings. i try to save as dxf but always gives error when over 90% progress.

Am I missing something here? Isn't a .dgn file a Microstation file? If you or a co-worker has Microstations can't you open the Microstation file and then export or save to dxf? It has been 15 years since I had any dealings with Microsation, so am a bit rusty in that area.

Ryder you are right and thats exactly i want to do but the process stalls when its just about to done.

Stalls in Microstation?

Can you save the dgn to a different name, make your changes and then try to dxf out the new file?

yes, error occurs while still in dgn. i will try your suggestion. thanks a lot.

Can't you just make a copy of the file, delete everything you don't need from the file in Microstation and then export as a dxf to work with in AutoCad?

Are you using Microstation or 3DS to save as dxf? AutoCAD can import some DGN files.

OK, i got this done.

as i said earlier problem was that dgn file was too big. there were about 15 models on one drawing but i just wanted 2-3 from them. i tried compress and also deleted lot of stuff i did not wanted but still either export from dgn or import from dwg did not work.

Now what i did is create one new dgn blank drawing, go to file-model & import model. this way you can just pick model you want from that big fat dgn.

thanks all for your thoughts.
