Hi all this is my first post so here goes. I would like to know if its possible to import a jpeg or bmp picture as a layer so I can take dimensions from to build a proper drawing. I am trying to follow some instructions in creating plans for boats and it says I can, but I cant. Anyone, please!

You can use the Attach command to bring an image into a drawing as a raster object. The scale and rotation will play a big part of it unless you know some dimensions before hand. It does not convert any thing in the image to vector objects for that you need a raster to vector program like Raster Design.

One other quickie, I'd like to change the colour of my paper to black and ink to white. I knew how to do it on an earlier version, but this one is well diferent.

Go to the tools menu, then all the way to the bottom to options. when the dialog box opens, click on the display tab. There's a button that says "colors". click it and pick the stuff you want to change.

You are referring to the "background" of your screen and the linework I believe. The background color can be changed by going to Options > Display > Colors.

You will only be able to scale (approx.) off of the image if the image has known dimensions on it so you can scale to those in AutoCad. If the image has no marked dimensions then it is useless to create a scaled drawing from.

I have all the dimensions, the picture I am using is a drawing by yacht designer and builder Albert Strange, Although some of the lines are a bit fuzzy.

Since you have dimensions then it should be easy enough to scale the image using the Scale by Reference option.
