nikola2210 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Hello! I dont know if I opened the thread in right forum section, if I didnt, mod's, please move it to right section. Here's the problem: Today or tomorow i will get new OS on my PC, and this means that all of my current settings in autocad will be gone, as i will get fresh copy installed. As i put a lot of effort and time in costumizing my user interface, i would like to somehow save those settings. Is this possible? Is there any file that contains settings of workspace and user interface? Thank you! Quote
ReMark Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 What settings are you interested in retaining? Please be as specific as possible. Quote
nikola2210 Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 I have tabs and panels set the way i want, and i would like to get them back when i get fresh installation of Autocad. I dont know if this is clear enuogh to you, but I think i found a way to do this. I went to workspace costumization and the to "Transfer" tab. I created new costumization file, and then opened it and copied workspace settings to that file. Will this wokr? Quote
BlackBox Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 There are a lot of materials out there on how *best* to accomplish this. Saving your customizations to a 'Custom.cui' is a good start. You might also consider what toolbars, menus, etc. your 'workspace' references, and take a screen shot for assisting you in the setup process post-OS installation. Additionally, you might consider exporting your current profile (Options > Profiles tab) to a thumb drive also, in order to help you with determining which file paths (if any) might need to be included in your new OOTB profile. Good luck! Quote
ReMark Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 What OS do you currently use? What OS are you moving to? Quote
nikola2210 Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Very useful information, thank you verry much!! Quote
SLW210 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Try using _CUIEXPORT. I have available on XP START>ALL PROGRAMS>AUTODESK>AUTOCAD 2011>MIGRATE CUSTOM SETTINGS>Export/Import/Migrate options. Quote
nikola2210 Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 I'm using XP Proffesional, and I'm moving to Windows 7. I will also try the thing with star menu. Then I will have 3 ways of restoring my setting, one of them will work hopefully. Quote
nestly Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Although I've never used it, AutoCAD2011 has Export/Import settings under Migrate Custom Settings on the Start Menu. I'd expect those to be included with 2010 as well. Here are the files I backup so I can restore my AutoCAD environment on any computer. Custom CUI (.CUIx) Profile (.ARG) custom.mnr Lisp routines, including Acad.lsp and Acaddoc.lsp Custom Templates (.dwt) and Custom Standards (.dws) Quote
nikola2210 Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 I've got first two files, and a .zip file with my plot styles and templates. I'll save lisp routines too, thank you for reminding me, I was about to leave them behind... Quote
ReMark Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I think you may have a problem trying to import a profile exported from WinXP to Win7 due to a difference in folder structure. I believe this was brought up in one of the AutoDesk University classes regarding the migration of AutoCAD customizations. I reference course number AC427-1 presented by Deni Cox and Jennifer Stockton. Quote
nestly Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Good point, depending on how you set up your new machine, you may have to change some of the support paths in Options > Files and Folders. I put all my custom Autocad support files in a folder in the root directory of C: to minimize path issues between different computers, but as far as compatibility, you shouldn't have any problems because I manually copy my Cui's, profiles, and mnr's from WinXP Pro 32bit to Win7 Pro 64bit, and vice-versa on a fairly regular basis. Quote
nestly Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Also, I wanted to clarify that when I said to copy your "Custom.cui", I wasn't necessarily referring to the file named "custom.cuix" I meant the CUI file you've done your customization in. That may or may not be the one named "custom.cuix" You should also be prepared to transfer your license, especially if you're going to abandoning your old machine right away. Quote
nikola2210 Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Most of the "movement" jobs will be done by IT department of company I work for, so licences should be their problem. I only have to worry that I set up my personal settings to the way there were before as soon as possible. About support file paths - this shouldn't be a problem because all support files are stored on network drives (plot styles, templates, fonts), not local drives, so paths should remain the same. Besides, if there would be any problems with that, I already have all my files saved to a memory stick, so I will find a way to get things working the way I want again. Quote
nikola2210 Posted April 14, 2011 Author Posted April 14, 2011 Windows 7 was installed on my PC last week, but I havent had time to report back about moving from XP to Windoes 7 untill now. So, most of the GUI settings didnt work, all I managed to get back was name of the workspace I used before, and some of the settings (pickbox size, background colors, etc.) All tabs and ribbons were gone and I couldn't get them back, so I had to rearrange everything... It took some time, but I'm happy with the way my system works now, its a lot faster, and it looks much better... Quote
nestly Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 My guess is that you may not have transferred all your customizations, or you old CUI wasn't in the right location for your profile to find it. I routinely copy the same CUI between 3 computers (2 XP Pro & 1 Win7 64) so I always have exactly the same workspaces on all my machines, then again, I don't "transfer" them, I just copy my customized CUI (which is not the one named custom.cuix) with Windows Explorer. Starting fresh is good sometimes as well.... I guess. Glad you got it all sorted out. Quote
