Hello!

I was wondering if anyone could share their workflow or suggestions for setting up a CAD block library.

I have been collecting blocks of furniture and plants for CAD projects into a single dwg file - my library. I then copy & paste the blocks as needed into my project file. Usually I have to BEDIT them to change layer & then scale to size. I have tried adding blocks to the Tool Palette with no success.

I know my workflow is totally newbie & there must be a more efficient way! Thanks in advance for any input.

Tollpalettes is the best way to do what you want. We have several CAD-Standards implemented using palettes.

Check out Michaels' Corner on this site and the Case Study at this link: http://www.autocadtrainerguy.com/

That should sort out your problems.

why are you BEDITing them to change layer? If you define your blocks on layer 0 they will take on the properties of whatever layer you put them on.

I would also recommend that you persevere with tool palettes, they are great for often used blocks although we still maintain individual files for other blocks that would clutter up a palette. These are stored in a folder in the search path so can be brought in to the current drawing with a simple INSERT command.

I don't use th eDesign Centre but this can also be used to fetch a block from another drawing.

Tool palettes would be the most logical way to go followed by the use of Design Center. An Internet search could easily find a handful of good tutorials about creating a custom Tool Palette. Other options include AutoCAD Help, your AutoCAD User's Guide, AutoCAD Customization Guide and/or a good after-market AutoCAD book.
