johnpieter Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 hey anybody tell how to prepare *.gif (Video)?i like to take the Video with cad(for some cad practical training class). Quote
troggarf Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 CamStudio is a free screen capture software and will make the .avi file. http://download.cnet.com/CamStudio/3000-13633_4-10067101.html As for the converter that turns the avi to an animated gif, I am currently on someone else's computer so I cannot remember what the program is called or where to get it. It is a free program... I will post what it is when I get to my computer in a little while Quote
troggarf Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 So the converter that I use is also free. It is called VirtualDub. http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ Camtasia does a great job for making videos but costs too much. Both of the items I have listed here are FREE and do the job. Quote
irneb Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 I also go with CamStudio and then VirtualDub. Though then I process the GIF through A-Smaller-Gif which generally compresses the GIF by 30-50% without quality loss. I've used Camtasia before. If you're willing to pay for it you get much he same result as for the 3-step process above. It's just less manual steps. Quote

irneb Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 troggarf after taken how can i save??here no saving option..After stoping play its automatically playing now.but after playing how can i save??any output path we need to mention??can you help please!!Here's the procedure: Open CamStudio Under Options --> Video Options, choose a compression codec. I prefer using the default FM Screen Capture Codec. Set the frame rate to something between 3-10 fps (since you're going for GIF this should be fine). Under Region --> Fixed Region choose the area of the screen you want captured. The above gets remembered so you only need do it once. Click the round red record button. CamStudio should hide itself to the taskbar and start recording. After you're finished doing whatever you want recorded, right-click on the CamStudio icon in the taskbar and pick Stop. You should be asked where to save the AVI file. [*]Open VirtualDub File --> Open video file ... browse to where you saved the AVI File --> Export --> Animated GIF Browse to where you want the GIF, choose "Play once, Infinite Loop, or Loop count #. Click OK and wait till all the frames have been exported. [*]If you then want to compress the GIF even smaller, open A Smaller GIF. You should be asked to pick the source file. File --> Save / Save As As example I had a full screen (1680x1050 @ 3fps) screen capture of just over 2 minutes, 14MB AVI, 3.5MB GIF, and 1MB compressed GIF. If you don't want to go through all those steps, then do as alanjt's suggested with Camtasia. It produces much the same result by simply going up to step 1.5. If you want something even better compressed, but don't mind what file format it is and you're on 32bit. Then look for M$'s Windows Media Encoder, use its Windows Media Video 9 Screen codec - I've yet to find something which even comes close. E.g. that same AVI converted to a 570kB WMV file (CBR, 50Kbps, 3fps, key @ 8 sec, Video smooth 50) - about the same quality as the GIF. It seems it's been discontinued though, so I can't find a 64bit version. M$ opens this page if I use Help --> Windows Media Encoder On-line Information. Quote
