raymarcher Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Some questions of layers: -here can I see visually which objects are deposited in the layers like in illustrator, see screenshot, -is nesting of layers allowed -what is the easiest way to swap objects from layer to layer -how can I select all objects from one certain layer? greetings from an Autocad novice Quote
designerstuart Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) sorry i am a little confused...... title says "autocad" profile says "3ds max" thread says "illustrator" .......so i will assume you are asking questions about autocad........ 1 layers cannot be nested 2 objects can be selected and put onto any layer using the dropdown in layers toolbar 3 command LAYISO will show only objects on the selected layer(s) Edited May 11, 2011 by designerstuart Quote

A) You can sort of simulate nesting, for visually arranging layers at least, by using layer filters and a layer naming standard. Note in the example below how "Grading" is "nested" inside of "Topo", which is nested inside of "Civil". You can perform operations (Freeze, thaw, isolate, lock, etc.) on the groups. B) To move an object to another layer, select it and use Quick Properties, Properties, the dropdown in the "Layers" toolbar, or in the Layers panel of the Ribbon. C) Either the QSELECT or FILTER command. Quote
qball Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 "objects deposited in layers" LAYWALK command will isolate the objects layer by layer on the drawing screen Quote
raymarcher Posted May 12, 2011 Author Posted May 12, 2011 Thanks for all the tips, I take notes of everything and will try things out. Quote
CADTutor Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 I think it's important to point out that layers in AutoCAD are not analogous to layers in applications like Illustrator and Photoshop. Indeed, the term "layers" in AutoCAD is rather misleading. It would be more accurate to describe AutoCAD layers as "categories" because they are used to organise drawing data conceptually rather than to imply any physical hierarchy. Quote
