Cheesecake7 Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I just downloaded a student version of Autocad for a uni assignment. I was hoping someone could link me to or upload a drawing/template I could use as a template. I just need appropriate layers to draw some columns / beams and slab with basic reo in Metric format (model will be drawn in mm's). A simple A3 layout with title block would also be nice I have tried googling for template downloads but all I got was a bunch of sites telling me how to make my own (rather not waste my time) and that Autocad should have come with some available (none had more than 2 layers). Thanks Quote
designerstuart Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 welcome to the forum! it is very simple to create layers, and also then make your drawing a template file if necessary. google "create layer autocad" and it will take you about 2 minutes to do it. it would take longer than that for me to find and post you one! (i would have to make it first anyway) Quote
Organic Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 AutoCad does come with some basic templates. Layers are extremely simple to create though, so as above it would be pointless to get a template (unless you create it yourself for your own use) with layers setup in it already as you would then just have to change those as needed anyway. Cheesecake7 Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 I was hoping someone would already have one they were willing to share. In the meantime I've decided to try and make it myself and my problem is that in the model view hidden detail lines look fine but in the layout the dashes are ridiculously long and I can't work out how to change it Quote
designerstuart Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 did you start with an autocad template? the variable PSLTSCALE should be set to 0, and TILEMODE set to 0 too i think. (enter them as a command) Quote
Cheesecake7 Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 I did start from the template. PSLTSCALE was set to 1 I changed it to 0 and used 'View - regen all' and it works fine Thanks Quote
designerstuart Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 so your template is all set up now - with the right layers and everything. well done! remember to save it as .dwt if you want it to be in template format for future use. maybe you'd like to share it with us?! Quote
JD Mather Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 .... all I got was a bunch of sites telling me how to make my own (rather not waste my time)... I don't think learning to make your own template is a "waste of time". In fact I think everyone should learn to do it. ...dashes are ridiculously long and I can't work out how to change it... In the end - it will be worth your while to figure out all this stuff. You will be the Guru in your office. Quote

Organic Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 JD Mather Post something helpful or don't post anything at all please What he did post was helpful. I've seen far worse posts (by other users, not him) which are critical of the poster and less helpful. Quote
dbroada Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 What he did post was helpful. I've seen far worse posts (by other users, not him) which are critical of the poster and less helpful.you beat me to it. I was going to post a similar comment. Quote
designerstuart Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 it will be worth your while to figure out all this stufftrue but isn't this forum here to help people learn this stuff? it would be a bit of a waste of time if all we said was "you can work this out yourself". but now cheescake7 knows the answer and the method, and is on the way to guru-dom. yay! nukecad Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I've posted this link before but here it is again: http://www.autocadeverything.com/help/showthread.php/4380-METRIC-DRAWING-TEMPLATES. If you follow this link you will find a zip file contaning a full set of metric templates with drawing borders, layers, dimension styles, etc already set up for you to use and/or modify as you like. designerstuart Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 that's great nukecad, thanks for sharing. did you make these templates? Quote
SLW210 Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 JD Mather Post something helpful or don't post anything at all please I actually find that comment offensive. I don't think learning to make your own template is a "waste of time". In fact I think everyone should learn to do it. In the end - it will be worth your while to figure out all this stuff. You will be the Guru in your office. If you feel that was not helpful to you, then you need not waste everyone else's time to do your job for you. Quote
Ohnoto Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 What JD Mather posted is true. By learning these things you will become the guru of your office. Several years ago I worked for a short period at an architecture company than the one I am at now (which I had prior to the architecture one). During that time I learned about things like templates, taught myself dynamic blocks, and other concepts. It completely changed the way I looked at CAD. When I came back to where I am now, I brought that knowledge as they weren't using dynamic blocks, or templates and I completely changed our CAD department for the better. By learning these things, which are simple concepts, many just don't want to take the time to learn them, you could make things better and quicker where you are, which only makes you look better and more knowledgeable. Soon people will come to you with ideas and ask for suggestions. Now... on to your original posting... I'm not sure what you can or can't do in a student version. I think the only thing is when something is printed it states "Student Version" on the print, but someone correct me if I am wrong. With that said, to create a template open up a new drawing and put everything you want for your template into that drawing, including any page layouts and then adjust your UNITS to mm. Now do a save as, at the bottom save it as a DWT file where you want it to be located. Now go to options -> file tab -> template settings -> Default Template File Name for QNEW. Browse to that file location and have it set there. Now anytime you start up ACAD or a new drawing your template file will appear. Quote
Bill Tillman Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 Its easy to see an e-mail or posting and not see the intent the author has. Believe us when we tell you that What you are asking to do is very simple and can be done in less than 60 seconds if you will just ask the correct questions in lieu of asking for someone to send you a premade template. JD Mather is one of the most respected, experienced and helpful people in this forum. I can say that he's helped me numerous times. But if you post like you just did, then you can count on him ignoring you in the future. And that would be unfortunate for you. I will wager that within this very forum you could conduct a search and find at least a dozen other posts which will help you get your template started and running. Remember, if you give a man a fish, he eats today. If you teach him to fish, he eats for the rest of his life. Now, go stand in the corner until you think you can behave in a civilized manner that is dignifying to the other users in this forum. Quote
designerstuart Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 given that Its easy to see an e-mail or posting and not see the intent the author hasthis is a bit harsh:Now, go stand in the corner until you think you can behave in a civilized manner that is dignifying to the other users in this forum cheesecake was just trying to get answers. okay, they didn't go about it the most tactful way, but to get this upset about it is silly. we're all learning here, let's help each other. isn't that what we're here for? Cheesecake7 Posted May 20, 2011 Author Posted May 20, 2011 I was starting to think that people only posted opinions on this forum and I really don't care what you think. That said thanks heaps to Nukecad, exactly what I was after and thanks to designerstuart for the PSLTSCALE hint Quote
