I want a field to display the name I have in the paper space tab, how can I do this?

Your "PageSetupName" should be the same as your tab name. Use that data item from the Field List.

Wait. I am running 2009 LT and I can't change my Layout names except on the tab rightclick menu anyway. I can't get my own suggestion to work. Even though my page setup is named the same as the tab, by default I guess, nothing is coming up in the field except dashed lines. It could be that I am suffering the indignity of LT-ism here. I did this very thing the last time I used full AutoCAD and it worked fine.

Should be CTAB

Yeah, that too. Both command & right click work for me. I just don't use commands much, unless they are not available anywhere else.

But I thought I remembered that full AutoCAD would let you rename the page set up within the page setup mgr. I get a right click menu but it is greyed out.

I have been using only LT at my house for two years now, I may be miss-remembering something. I shoulda stayed shut up.

But maybe I gave the OP an idea to go looking around for something that does work.

alright, I just slapped myself in the forehead and went Dhoh.

You have to add at least one Page Setup Name in the PLOT dialog window dropdown before anything is in that field.

how can you make a field update when you make a change. (not having to use "update fields")

Tools > Options > User Preferences > Field Update Settings.

I am not following, how is the PageSetupName equal to layout tab names. My layout tabs can be named M01, M02, etc., the pagesetup will be named after a plotter. Sorry if I missed something obvious.

It isn't, but can be ...

...if the OP wants the tab name to show in a Field. You can name it after my Mother-in-law, instead of a plotter, but she is grumpy.

PageSetupName (No Spaces) is the data item you select from the Field list. It is user populated Only if you add the name in the plot dialog. Then if you click the "Apply to Layout" button it will stick.

The page set up showing on the layout manager is a copy of the Tab Name. Once PageSetupName is populated, it will appear in parentheses behind the tab name on the page set up manager window if it has been applied to a layout. It will also appear in that same window as a separate page setup whether it was applied or not. I suppose you can make it stick to more than one layout, haven't tried.

OK, thanks for the explanation, this is what I thought you were describing earlier. I understood the OP wanted the layout tab name to display in a field so it seems to me the CTAB sysvar would be the better solution.

You may be right, as long as we are plotting the current layout and the FIELD gets updated. Batching them somehow may be a problem.

I wonder if PageSetupName remembers what it is loaded with on each of several layouts at once. I'll have to test it. This may be a case of not wanting the FIELDs to update once each has the desired value.

I didn't even know PageSetupName existed until the OP posted the question. I guess I beat him to the detective work.
