making freehand editable spline objects with multiple surfaces

The attached file here is an editable spline object. One part of the

object is closed, the other is an open set of splines that is attached.

Is it possible to weld the open spline to the closed one at the closest

points and convert the object to an editable poly with two surfaces?

If not, is there another method to achieve this?

When I Import your file it comes in as an Editable Mesh, so I don't really understand what you're wanting to do?

Can you zip your .max file and post it here?

This is what it looks like when I Import the .3ds file:

I see what happened here. The open spline object, in the same plane as the closed one, is not visible. Unfortunately the .max file won't upload, I could send it to you in an email. As simply as

I can put it, I just want to make 2 closed shapes that share one edge. I'm beginning to think this isn't how Max works and it isn't possible to do this. Imagine a 2D jigsaw puzzle where a different

bitmap could be applied to each piece. Ultimately I'm trying to create a file that can be used by a laser cutting machine.

Maybe if you just post a screenshot so I can see the objects you're talking about?

I think I know what you're trying to do though.

You should make both spline objects closed and then convert them both to editable poly. Attach them and then Weld the vertices along the shared edge.
