nidhi singhania Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Hello, I currently am working on 3ds max 2008, where in i created a pen holder using a tube... Now i have this jpeg that i want to apply for the material on the object, but i want the black portion of it to be transparent where as the solid portion of the image to b seen as solid material. Can someone help me with this!!!! Quote
Cad64 Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 You need an opacity map. An opacity map is a greyscale image where black is transparent, white is opaque and shades of grey are seen as semi-transparent depending on how dark or light they are. The first image below is your Diffuse map and the second image is the Opacity map. It goes in the 'Opacity' map slot, as shown in the third image below. The fourth image is a rendering of a flat plane with the materials applied. Quote
Raudel Solis Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 take it into photoshop and make a opacity map. like this one... the white specifies visible objects the black specifies the transparant portion "note its not just about the opacity map... make sure the mapping is correct on the pen holder or else it will be applied all over the object.. to fix it you can either detach the top polygons and apply the material to the new object after applying a UVW map or you can select the polygons individually and then apply the material. nidhi singhania Posted July 30, 2011 Author Posted July 30, 2011 Well, how can i convert it into an opacity map!!!! I mean the black and white jpg Quote
nidhi singhania Posted July 30, 2011 Author Posted July 30, 2011 Yes, Photoshop CS4. I went to swatches -> adjustments and changed its contrast and brightness... Will that do! Quote
Cad64 Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Ok, here's a quick Photoshop tutorial. 1. Open the image in Photoshop and save it under a different name 2. Select the 'Magic Wand' tool Set the tolerance down around 15 Make sure 'Contiguous' is unchecked 3. Click inside one of the black circles to select all the black area you want to be transparent 4. Hold down Shift & Ctrl and hit "I" to invert the selection 5. Fill the selected area with White You should now have a completely white background with black circles 6. Hit Ctrl + "D" to deselct 7. Go to Filter > Blur > Gausian Blur Set the Radius to 1.0 pixels and hit Ok. This will soften the transition from white to black around the edges of the circles 8. Save Quote
nidhi singhania Posted July 30, 2011 Author Posted July 30, 2011 Yepieee....... I got it... Now 1 more problem croped up:oops: Till the time i was applying the material to a tube or plane, it was ok, but then i made a S kind of shape via line tool n then extruded and shelled it.Then when i tried to attach the same material to this newly created object, some how , my entire object vanished.I tried to see it in render as well, but there too it is coming as blank, but in viewports the selection frame of the object is visible... Now whats the catch behind this!!!! Quote
Cad64 Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 It sounds like your object is inside out. Use polygon selection mode, window select the entire object and click the Flip button. Quote
nidhi singhania Posted July 31, 2011 Author Posted July 31, 2011 Well, I dont think so, as soon as I fliped the object its turned into black and same invisible thing happened, about which I have said earlier. Quote
Cad64 Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Ok, I guess you probably just need to set up the UVW mapping coordinates on the object then. The mapping coordinates define how the texture wraps around the model. Search Google. There are literally hundreds of tutorials covering UVW mapping. Quote
nidhi singhania Posted August 1, 2011 Author Posted August 1, 2011 I tried, but it somehow is not working for me. Quote
Cad64 Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Can you upload your file with the "S" shaped object so I can take a look? Quote
nidhi singhania Posted August 1, 2011 Author Posted August 1, 2011 Hey, thanks.. I got it now... Quote
