QualityEngineer Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Ok Here goes.. Im currently running 32bit Autodesk development suit, however my new system (listed below) is fully 64bit compatible and autodesk have kindly sorted me out with 64 bit versions of the software. I understand that 64 bit acesses large amounts of memory better, but only recognises a max of 3gb of memory. Ive got 8gb and running 32bit recognises 4gb as standard. Do i sacrafice 1gb of memory and run 64bit for better recourse access performance, or do I stick withe the 32bit address aloocation and remain using 4gb of memory? What would provide better performance in peoples opinion? thanks QE Quote
emwhite Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 (edited) 64bit handles way more than 3gb. Max RAM for Windows 7 Pro+ and 64bit is 192GB http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/max-memory-limits-for-64-bit-windows-7/4254 I have a 64bit laptop with 8GB's of RAM and Window's 7 has no issue with accessing it all when needed. QualityEngineer Posted August 2, 2011 Author Posted August 2, 2011 so wndows 7 WILL access more than 3gbs of ram as ive spoken to Microsoft and they advise me that it wouldnt, or are they wrong and this only applies to vista and XP?? thanks QE Quote

I would think Vista would be similar to 7. Quote
emwhite Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Here is Microsoft's breakdown of Max RAM depending on OS, 32 bit or 64bit. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx Quote
ReMark Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Windows 7 64-bit will definitely access more than 3GB of memory. I have 8GB installed on my home system and 12GB installed on my work system. I'm looking at another system with 32GB of RAM! Quote

And im going with 64bit. The power that Ill need to utilise will suit it better... Quote
ReMark Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 Don't believe everything your wife tells you. She could be lying. 64-bit systems are here, now and readily available as well as tested. Anyone buying a new computer and specifying a 32-bit system needs to rethink their decision. RAM is like money. You can never have too much. Quote
