matt sad Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Hi there every one its my first post i have a small problem that i need help with i need to find out how much spoil i need to take off site i have a dwg drawing of a new road layout with proposed levels on it and i also have a topo dwg with existing levels on it i also know the reduce levels to reduce it to ive got autocad civil is it posible i can use autocad to find the volume to be taken off site or areas that need filling thanks Quote
Organic Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 Essentially you want to find the cut required. Civil 3D is certainly going to be more useful here than vanilla AutoCad. Is it possible for you to obtain the natural/design DTMs for the road (with these it is then easy to obtain the cut and fill required)? Alternatively, do you have cross sections for the proposed road? If so, you can manually calculate the cut & fill required from the NS. Quote
Tyke Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 As Dink said, with Civil 3D it is certainly possible. Are the DWGs that you have 2D or 3D? You need them to be 3D to be able to do the cut and fill calculations in C3D. Quote
matt sad Posted August 10, 2011 Author Posted August 10, 2011 yes i have a copy of civil 3d 2012 but ive never used yes the dwgs are in 3d the topo survey has got levels scattered about every where yes i do have the new proposed levels on a dwg i also have the section drawings so i know the build up of materials eg hardcore tarmac ect yes i can calculate it manualy but thought it would be easier with autocad and more accrete thanks for your help can you tell me how to do it on cad c3d:( Quote
Tyke Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 The principle is quite straightforward, you make a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the existing topography, a DTM of the formation level of your road construction and then a difference DTM where you pick the existing ground and new formation and it then reports the amount of cut and fill. If you want then to find the volumes of the various construction layers of the roadway you need to create a DTM for each layer and then a difference DTM of the two, and repeat this for each layer. There's plenty of information in the help files to get you going with creating DTMs and if you Google for "YouTube +AutoCAD +Civil +3D" you'll find plenty of good video tutorials. Good luck and by the way welcome to the forum. Quote
clepine Posted August 10, 2011 Posted August 10, 2011 If you have two surfaces, use the ANALYZE ribbon, click the down arrow on VOLUMES, click VOLUMES, it brings up another window, click CREATE NEW VOLUME ENTRY, then you set your base surface and your comparision surface and it will compute your cut and fills and your net, which will let you know your spoils quantites in cubic yards.
