Convert STEP to DWG

Recommended Posts

and5e

Good Morning All,

I have recently started using AutoCAD 3D Plant 2011.

I am trying to create a catalogue of Valves that we use on site by getting all the 3D blocks from suppliers. A few of our suppliers are sending me STEP files.

Would anyone be able to explain what programme these are from and if they can be converted to a format that can be used by AutoCAD?

Thanks in advance

I can't speak for AutoCAD 2011 but in the 2012 version STEP files can be imported. Did you check your Help file?

Another option: Babel3D

"Babel3D is a free web-based 3D file translation service, which allows you to convert between various popular 3D file formats like 3DS, OBJ, SketchUp, DXF, DWG, Rhino 3DM, STEP, IGES, VRML, STL and JT."

Registration (which is still free) is required. Find Babel3D at...https://www.babel3d.com/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2f

Yet another option would be to use AutoDesk's Inventor Fusion Technology Preview. Instructions can be found here...http://www.ehow.com/how_7502016_convert-stp-dwg.html

Oh it looks like AutoDesk 123D can open step and save as dwg. It's free and worth a look.

Well I tried a skp file to dwg on Babel3D and it failed. Might go in and clean up the file and try again.

STEP is a neutral format file type that can be read by most CAD programs (exept for AutoCAD 2000i-2011) (I might be wrong on the 2000i - at some point STEP translator was dropped until 2012).

You might try free Inventor Fusion http://labs.autodesk.com for converting STEP to dwg. http://au.autodesk.com/?nd=class&session_id=3056
