I'm new to AutoCAD and am trying to open a dwg file containing contour lines in it. The file was made using a different version of AutoCAD, and the contour lines come in as proxy entities. I need to make a tin with the contour lines, but can't because they are being read as proxy entities, not polylines.

When trying to download the suggested object enabler (in this case AutoDesk Land desktop 2005) in order to work with the proxy entities, I get an error message - "Set up did not detect a valid version of Autodesk Object DBX." I don't know how to resolve this! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, is it possible to form a tin with the contour lines as proxy entities and not have to download an object enabler?

Sounds like you have downloaded the wrong OE. Double check the website ( http://www.autodesk.com/oe ) to make sure you are getting the right one.

What software are you using to create a TIN?

Can you have the contour drawing author send you a new drawing in which the contours are polylines? Better yet, why not just get the TIN from him? If contours are present, there has to be a TIN. Why remake a surface from contours?

I agree! Have the original person save their drawing back to an older version. This will allow the surface to come in as polylines, rather than proxy objects. We do this all the time for people who don't have Civil 3D.

Actually I think it's me who has the newer version. I'm working in AutoCAD 2007, and the Object Enabler that's recommended when I open the file is AutoDesk Landdesktop 2005.

I have been making the tins with QuickSurf.

I was able to download a 2007 object enabler without getting the error message I got when downloading the Landdesktop 2005 OE. I don't understand why I get the error message with one and not the other?
