I attempted both a purge and an audit, both seem to freeze AutoCAD... I'm keeping it running just in case, but it appears to be locked. When I initially couldn't figure out the problem, I actually tried copying everything to a new drawing. That didn't work, and that's what made me the most baffled.

Sounds like something about the drawing has glitched... Since I can't actually see it I can't say but if purge is freezing your drawing that's not a good sign.

Try running a recovery.

Otherwise it has to be some layer control

Has to be some glitch. I finally got it fixed. What I had to do was put everything in a new file, including all my x-refs. So... bit of a pain, and I still don't know the root of the problem, but hopefully fixed permanently.
