ziemerd Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 I have 3 different drawings of the front panel of a chassis. One shows the components assembled on the panel with reference labels. Another drawing is exactly the same but has labels naming the function of the component such as "Tracks Steering Pot", then the third drawing shows the holes for the components and dimensions for making the panel. My question is can I draw this panel in model space with two sets of labels on two different layers and then have a layer showing the component assembly and another layer the hole needed to mount the component on different layers then in the viewport show this panel with certain layers turned on and others turned off to show the panel with the components mounted with ref labels then another viewport showing the same panel with the function label layer turned on and the ref label layer turned off. Then another viewport showing the holes and dimensions but none of the labels or components. I hope that was clear. The reason I want to do this is because if I drew this panel 3 different times then I would be grabbing the block for the panel 3 times and that would change my BOM to say this chassis has 3 front panels. Thanks for the help. Dawn Quote
skipsophrenic Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Try this thread here, put what you want on to the two differnt layers and then follow lpseifert's post as to how to freeze in your viewports. http://www.cadtutor.net/forum/showthread.php?t=28035 Hope this helps Quote
manhattan Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 your approach to this problem is exactly right not just because of the incorrent BOM output you mentioned. It drives me mad when people unecessarily copy geometry for multiple views / additional details instead of just freezing the unnecessary information in viewports. Ive encountered many instances of people doing this and at a later date having to make a very small change only to forget to change each copy they made, by making a copy the margin for error doubles, very bad practice imo sorry, long day at work. rant over Quote
ziemerd Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 Thanks you guys. This really helps a lot. Quote
ziemerd Posted October 16, 2008 Author Posted October 16, 2008 Ok...it worked fine but I have a question. I noticed I have a column in the Format Layer that says New VP Freeze and another column that says VP Freeze. Does anyone know what the New VP Freeze means? Thanks again for the help. Dawn Quote
manhattan Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 i have seen it and would assume it freezes particular layers for any new viewports which are created but leaves your current viewports as they are. never actually used it so maybe someone could confirm this Quote
skipsophrenic Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 I got to admit i THINK manhattans right, but i'm on plain vanilla cad so it might be something specific to electrical, i'm not too sure Quote
