Offsetting a ruled surface

I'm trying to use the surface offset command to create offsets of simple ruled surfaces. No offsets results and the command area reports that the ruled surface is invalid. However if I build the same surface using 4 lines (edgesurf) then it will offset the resulting surface. Can anyone advise please?
