Xref problems

I have received drawings from the designer and I can open and edit them yet when I put them into my drawing as an xref nothing shows up. even if I specify the insertion point. same issue with the title block they sent. I can open in on it own but when adding it to my existing drawing as a block nothing is there. I am new to auto CAD so if there is a step I'm missing please let me know.

1) what layer is current when xrefing and is that layer on and thawed?

 

2) the model information in the file being xrefed, is it in model space or paper space.

 

3) make sure (use rename) that there isn't a block already in the drawing using the same name as the file being xrefed in. If so, rename the block by adding an X or 1, etc at the end of the name.

I was in model space trying in xref and dwg file which usually gives me no problems. and in addition with a new title block in paper space you can select the new title block and it shows it in the preview. yet when you click "OK" to insert nothing is there, even if I zoom ext.

Kindly respond to each of the three items I suggested.

 

EX: 1) the layer that is current is ___ and I have verified that it is on and thawed.

3).....

4) open a new drawing, go to model space, xref in the file. Did it work?
