I typicaly use romans for my text, however it doesnt allow you to bold or use italics.

Is there a way to change this, or is there a font that is very similar that will let you bold and italic?

I don't think you can't could it without a lot of work (i.e. - create a new shape file).

How about applying an Oblique angle to romans instead?

With a bit of Lineweight and obliquing angle, you can get Romans to look like Bold and Italic.
