Need AutoCAD 2010

I just left a company that has AutoCAD 2010, and started with a new company that doesn't have AutoCAD at all. It is my responsibility to get it.

I only want to get the 2010 version. However, I can only find where to buy 2012, officially. I've found a few sites that have older versions for sale, but they don't look legitimate, because they are selling for $200. (can you say pirated?)

Does anybody know where I can find a legitimate copy of 2010?

In my opinion, the 2010 version, if found and purchased, may be setting your company up for massively expensive updates in the not too distant future.

If this company is going to start AutoCad now, it is just not a good idea to set them back 2 years on day one.

I appreceate your opinion, however the amount of drafting required here is minimal, I'm already intamently familar with 2010, and frankly I don't even use all of the features that 2010 offers.

I understand you point, but I'm hoping that I can find 2010 at least slightly discounted.

Authorized (meaning legally responsible) AutoDesk dealers cannot sell you a copy of AutoCAD 2010 as they are prohibited from doing so by AutoDesk. That's why when you call and talk to a rep he/she will try to sell you the latest version.

I have no doubt you could find and buy a copy of 2010 but there is no guarantee that AutoDesk will provide you with an authorization code for registering the program. Now what do you do? You're out the money you already spent, you have no ability to run the software after 30 days and you're faced with buying another (new) copy. That will put you in real good with management. Don't expect a raise.

One alternative is to go "clone", pay a lot less money, and still have most if not nearly all of the same functionality. Need some suggestions?

Low cost AutoCAD clones.

I know that the last company I was at recently purchased additional seats for a new employee they hired, so I know it can be done legally. Maybe they had some type of agreement that allows them to purchase additional seats?????????

They don't.

Eeeeeeeewwww. Then first thing to do is evaluate their hardware settup. If they still run Imac G3's, then you have your work cut out for you.

Might I suggest purchasing a copy of AutoCad LT 2012. It is not "very" expensive, and when the company hits the bigtime, they can upgrade.

There isn't all that much new stuff in there that's very different from 2010 anyway, unless you are refering to the 'dreaded ribbon' being the forced default workspace gui. I think there is a way to use the Classic view in the 2012 version.

They bought a "license" to add another seat they did not buy an actual copy of the software. If you don't believe me give the rep a call. He'll explain the facts of life to you as dictated by AutoDesk.

So by that rationale, If I can find where one copy of 2010 was purchased in the past, somewhere within this company, I can get an additional licenses?

The purchase of Additional seats has to do with installing the original software on more computers, not new software, and the rights to the seats may have been part of a subscription purchase.

ONLY if it is in the original purchasing company name. You can't make it a personal license.

Assuming you were to find a company that no longer needs its copy of AutoCAD 2010, here is what AutoDesk says on their website re: license transfers:

Can a licence be transferred to another company?

The licence holder of Autodesk software is subject to the Terms and Conditions mentioned in the Autodesk software licence agreement (Autodesk software license agreement). This contract with Autodesk appears when the Autodesk product is opened/installed. This agreement clearly states that Autodesk software cannot be transferred to another company.

I'm no lawyer, but that was 2 releases ago. You are not going to get a legal copy of 2010. If price is an issue, I highly recommend Bricscad. I have it on my laptop and am pleased enough with it that I may never upgrade my Autocad again. At around $600, it's half the price of LT and gives you 3d modeling capability. I have v11, and I understand v12 has been released now. My version approximates the abilities that Autocad2008 had. Most of the commands are named the same, the interface customizes in much the same way and you get lisp and vba support that you don't get in LT.

Your choices are as Remark pointed out...one of the clones, or 2012. I'm not sure you can even still by 2011, but you could check with your local reseller.

Given that 2013 will be out within the next couple of months I'd think the chances of even getting 2011 would be slim to none. But you could always ask.

I love DraftSight. To the original poster, AutoCAD 2012 is just like AutoCAD 2010 if you only used it minimally. If anything, you would see an increase in productivity in some of the new features, which aren't much in reality. If you can get your company to buy it then do so.

As for ReMark's post above, DraftSight is my all-time favorite freebie CAD software. It works and functions just like AutoCAD, and if you used AutoCAD minimally then DraftSight is beyond perfect for a substitute if your company will not get a hold of a legal copy for you. Highly recommended.

Draftsight is a great product, and while there is no lisp or vba, it does make use of Rubyscripting, so you can automate repetitive tasks with it. I used it on the laptop till I bought Bricscad. Doublecad XT is ok, but it has some strange things about it. Used it for a bit till I discovered Draftsight.

Time to chime in here..Remark is right on the money. You can only buy current copies. Now having said that if you buy into the subscription service you can get auth. codes for older versions but and I do mean but you have to have the original media (or get it from someone else).

I also agree with Styke that 2012 is better than 2010 in that it is made for current hardware, has bug fixes in it that were in 2010 and also has other improvements. I have both installed on my current box as I have a custom 3rd party Facilities Management system that has to run on 2010 and now that I am use to the current version 2010 shows it's age.

Also giving a vote to Draftsight if 2D is all you need. It's not 100% the same as Acad but it is darn close and free (with no support). Good votes on the other Acad clones from the others. Good luck

Unless the rules changed in the past year, if you are on subscription you can download the media from the subscription site, you just need to look for it and the subscription manager has to allow other users access to that area.
