3D Cylinders.jpgHow do subract/cut the part of the magenta cylinder inside the gray cylinder from the attached pdf? Am trying to figure out hot to add/insert an image. May have to start over. Edited by Hawley

When I subtract, selecting the gray cylinder to subtract from and then select the magenta cylinder to subtract, all of the magenta cylinder is subtracted.

You should select first the magenta cylinder and the grey one in the next step.

That deleted the entire gray cylinder and a "slot" in the magenta cylinder.

Then just make a copy of the grey part (using the same point as to/from) and use it in your boolean operation; next do what mdbdesign suggested - apply separate solids on magenta part; last step erase the part from inside the grey pipe.

I tried the above without any luck. I haven't been worjing in 3D for long and there's a long learning curve. Thanks for the help. I'd attach the dwg file but don't know how.

In this case please follow the succesion of commands below (some prompts/options may be slightly differant in your version):

 

Command: _COPY

Select objects: select the grey cylinder

Select objects:

Current settings: Copy mode = Multiple

Specify base point or [Displacement/mOde] : 0, 0

Specify second point or : 0, 0

Specify second point or [Exit/Undo] :

 

Command: _SUBTRACT

Select solids and regions to subtract from ..

Select objects: select the magenta cylinder

Select objects:

Select solids and regions to subtract ..

Select objects: Specify opposite corner: select the grey cylinder

Select objects:

 

Command: _SOLIDEDIT

Solids editing automatic checking: SOLIDCHECK=1

Enter a solids editing option [Face/Edge/Body/Undo/eXit] : B

Enter a body editing option [imprint/seParate solids/Shell/cLean/Check/Undo/eXit] : P

Select a 3D solid: select the magenta cylinder

Enter a body editing option

[imprint/seParate solids/Shell/cLean/Check/Undo/eXit] :

Solids editing automatic checking: SOLIDCHECK=1

Enter a solids editing option [Face/Edge/Body/Undo/eXit] :

 

Command: _ERASE

Select objects: select the magenta part inside the grey pipe

Select objects:

Thanks Mircea. That worked just as you said. I'll have to study those commands to try to follow the logic.
