I have got an old laptop (2004 model) with an old 2GHz cpu and 2GB of ram. Which version should you suggest i would install? Is it possible to go more than 2010? Or is 2010 even going to be demanding?

Posted

What OS is on the laptop?

How much system RAM is installed?

Is there a dedicated graphics card or a graphics chip?

Posted

I was on Vista x32, and now i freshly installed Win 8 (Consumer Preview).

How do you mean system RAM? I gota total of 2GB DDR-667 Physical Ram, with a generic onboard graphics chip (Intel GMA X3100).

Load the oldest version of AutoCAD that you have.

Isnt there some cad benchmark that can approximate the appropriate version of CAD? Do you think my cad wont go over AutoCAD 2010? Have the later versions been that much heavier?

To the best of my knowledge the installed sizes of the programs are as follows roughly

2007 500MB

2009 800MB

2011 950MB

2012 1.4GB

2013 1.5GB

Are you referring to installation sizes?

EDIT: How did that angry face icon get there? Weird...

If you think about it anything older than 2010 when run under Windows 8 you'll probably have problems with unless you utilize XP Mode or a separate piece of software called Longbow.

Good point ReMark, certainly would try using RUN THIS PROGRAM IN XP Mode first though, as it would be free if it works. Otherwise Longbow sounds like a real good call.

I am running 2012 on an old Vista 32-bit machine (the processor is actually 64-bit, but the machine was manufactured at the beginning of the 64-bit processors and there were not many drivers for 64-bit, thus the 32-bit OS).

It is generally not possible to obtain older releases unless you already have the license or are a student. (the Autodesk student site goes back 3 releases).

I'm running 2013 on an old Vista-32bit machine, and it works fine, when it isn't busy screwing up older drawings. :|

Nice point, I've been meaning to ask this, but anyway my university can give me access access to older versions if needed. For the moment I installed 2013 to try and see if it can run, but i encounter some issues. I opted not to install this new Autodesk Fusion 2013 software, and also i unchecked license manager from tools and utilities.

Now as soon as i launch i dont get the ribbon menu, and i get greeted by this. Does it matter that i chose not to install the aforementioned, or did something else go wrong in the installation? Can somebody make something from the following errors, and possibly how to fix things?

See the end of this message for details on invoking

just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this

application or computer (machine.config) must have the

jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.

The application must also be compiled with debugging

enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception

will be sent to the JIT de****** registered on the computer

rather than be handled by this dialog box.
