In any given shaded visual style, is there a way to select solids by their edges rather than the face? Ideally I would like to have X-Ray visual style turned on and be able to select objects in the background through objects in the foreground. This used to be possible in AutoCAD 2006, but I can't find any variable in AutoCAD 2011 to achieve this.

Isn't this governed by the system variable CULLINGOBJ? I think this has to be set to "0".

You would think so from it's description in the help file, however in practice I'm not getting the result, there are 2 culling variable - CULLINGOBJ & CULLINGOBJSELECTION, No combination of values between the 2 get me the result of being able to pick items in the background.

Post a copy of the DWG file. I'm running 2012 at the moment.

It isn't in relation to a specific model, any model (of mine) is the same.

In the picture below, the red box is in the foreground and the green in the background, my cursor is over one edge of the green box and the quick properties even relates to the green box, however the rollover highlight has the red box and that's the one I'll get if I try to select.

Right-Click>Subobject Selection Filter>Edge.

You should turn on SELECTION CYCLING at the bottom of your screen, next to mini properties.

2 excellent suggestions above, I don't use shortcuts in the drawing area but I did turn it on to try the Right-Click>Subobject Selection Filter>Edge - but of coarse that gives me the edge and I wanted to select the whole object. The SELECTION CYCLING works but doesn't give you grips when you select a different object from the selection list, so no good for me.

Not sure what use the X-Ray view style is for if I keep having to switch back to wire frame to select an object that's behind another, perhaps it's my drawing technique?

3DSELECTIONMODE = 0 perhaps?

That's the one, thanks all for your input.
