render with a white background?

I'm having a similar problem. The background color of white produces some bad effects in the rendering. So as Oppie recommends I used GIMP to get the totally white background.

if you save as a .tiff either the default settings or the one right under it ( the fourth option) one makes the background white regardless of what the background is. So you can minimize the white background washing out the shiny materials in your model. Sorry I'm on my phone and away from the house otherwise I would check it out.
