Hello everyone,

I am in 2D mode in autocad, drawing a plan. I have locked one layer and also increased the translucency, jet my snaps still respond to the objects in this layer, where all I want to do is keep it as an underlay while I draw the rest of the things. The objects within this locked layer are also selectable, they come up with doted lines once selected, but I can't edit or move them, because the layer is is locked.

Is there a way to lock the layer, so that it is completely ignored by snaps and selection, jet kept visible with little transparency?

I am using AutoCad 2013, and there are only blocks within this layer.

Thank you,

all the best,

You could possibly create a custom snaps program using AutoCAD's API or grread & reactors with AutoLisp.

By default however what you are looking for is not available with AutoCAD. It would certainly be a nice feature if it was available

right,

thank you for your reply Jammie, I thought that the lock might be a little similar to 3ds max. Yes, I agree, it would be very useful to have this option.

thanks again,

Turn everything on that layer into a block (or an xref), put the block (or xref) on the Defpoints Layer then freeze Layer0. When Layer0 is frozen, nothing on Defpoints is selectable, or snappable.

Fading can be achieved by locking Defpoints, and/or changing Defpoints layer transparency, or in the case of an xref by using XDWGFADECTRL (You would necessarily need to remove those objects from Defpoints prior to plotting however as Defpoints is a non-plot layer)

Glad that worked for you. Just remember that you'll need to unfreeze Layer0 if/when you need to work with anything on that layer....

Ok, I will keep that in mind, one thing I have noticed, when entering regenerate, the objects on that layer seam to disappear, when I change the transparency value, the objects reaper, but I don't have to press the RE that often, so it doesn't really get in the way. Thanks again
