Hi,

I’m really new to Auto CAD and I’m just trying to teach myself the basics before I go on and participate in a course. I have version Auto Cad 2005 and was just looking for so pointers.

I have set myself the challenge of drawing a locking pin I wish to get manufactured the dimensions are Ø 10mm x 180mm in length with a 20mm Ø flat plate on the end.

Where would I start in Auto cad?:?

You have at least two options: (1) call the CYLINDER command or (2) draw a circle and use EXTRUDE comamnd on it. This will allow you to create a 3D geometry called solid which can be used next to get the sketches for your shop.

If you were looking for just a simple sketch for shop, then just use the RECTANGLE command to draw it in 2D and dimension it.

My advice - go on the course, most Autocad courses teach you the basics, then you start drafting and come back to the forums to learn all the stuff they don't teach you. To be fair, its polite if you try to use the help menu first before you come to the forums! This'll be better for you as a lot of us on the forums will be using a later version than 2005 and as you'll soon come to discover, autocad is a fast-evolving but of kit. As I remember, 2005 was a pretty good release and still had the 'old' built in help system that was very good (it's web based now and IMHO worse for it).

If you want to learn basics yourself, get yourself a big flask of tea, a packet of biscuits and settle in for a couple of hours of youtube videos one evening!

That said, welcome to the big, OCD rife world of CAD! And good luck - we're all here if you need us... to a point anyway - as I've already mentioned, you'll get a lot more out of it and better responses from the forums if you have a go at sorting it out yourself through the help menu first.

Do you have a book?

If not, does your school or town have a book on AutoCAD?
